Well I thought the starter solenoid on my DK40 was bad. Replaced it and still can only start by turning key to "on" and using jumper wire at the starter.

I'm thinking bad s key switch.

I had same issue on the CK25. Took switch apart, cleaned and good to go.

The key on the DK is located on the steering column. Pretty straight forward to remove? Any tips aside from watch out for the small springs inside the key switch?

Also any thoughts if it could be something other than key switch?

Someone (KOua?)recently said they sprayed the cylinder with Fluid Film and said it helped

Fluid Film is good stuff for lots of things

That is a thought.

I have 6 cans in the barn. Couldn't hurt I suppose.

Wondering about that vs silicone or WD 40. The Fluid Film leaves a bit of a coating.

not really, it stays wet a long time but it seems to free up anything I have used it on
Silcone has screwed up a long for me years ago

WD as far as I am concerned is only good for fueling a potato gun

When my switch was acting up, I used electric motor cleaner or vehicle brake cleaner will do the same thing. It's greaseless, will clean the contacts and then totally evaporate. After that, used fluid film to lubricate and coat the contacts from hopefully further corrosion or dirt. So far so good.

I used Fluid Film about 2 years ago and it totally fixed mine. Here is a thread on getting the steering column housing apart in case if doesn't fix yours. Of couse I would be measuring on the coil of the start relay to see if the coil had 12 volts in the start position or not,, that will tell you if tearing into the key switch is the problem.

My switch had a bad spot in it when I bought the tractor. I had to find the sweet spot to start the tractor. The tractor set in the rain on the sales lot for a good while. I put PB Blaster in mine and it fixed it for awhile. I did get the dealer to order me a new switch. I started it out with a good lubricant and it has never been in the rain since.

drjay: The switch could be your problem and it's the easiest to fix. So work that first.

If I'm looking at the right schematic your start circuit is really simple: The key switch, the relay. and the cruise unit, which provides the ground for the relay. The cruise unit also lights the neutral light on the instrument panel and prevents starting (by removing the ground from the relay) if it thinks you are in gear. Do you see the neutral light on the instrument panel when you try to start the tractor?

The cruise unit determines if you are in neutral via a potentiometer (variable resistor) on the gear select lever and some owners have had problems with it. But if you have a good neutral light, the potentiometer isn't your problem.

The schematic also shows an inline diode between the relay and the cruise unit, which might fail (rare) or you might have a poor electrical connection in that circuit. I have nor read of a failed cruise unit, particularly where the neutral light worked but the starter didn't. But I guess it's possible.

Are you sure you checked the right relay? An identical relay, also on the firewall, controls the glow circuit and one owner reported the connectors were swapped to the other relay (which works fine but is confusing). If you have a helper, you should be able to feel the relay click in (with your hand) as your helper turns the key. The glow relay should click when the switch is turned to "on" and the start relay should not click until the switch id turned to "crank."

If the start relay doesn't click, you could try providing a "bypass" ground to the ground side of the coil to diagnose a possible problem in the cruise unit or associated wiring. Good luck. By the way, the relays will work fine even if unscrewed from the firewall, which may be useful for troubleshooting. They are just mounted there so they don't flop around. Good luck.

Good info above ^^.
The only thing I would add is on your firewall the 3 relays on the left side of the firewall are START, GLOW, and FUEL SHUTOFF counting left to right.. The glow plug relay in the middle is a 70 amp relay but the start relay and the fuel solenoid shutoff relay are both 30 amp units.

James, thanks for correcting me. I got lazy and shot from the hip without checking the book.
