As anyone who has been following any of my threads lately will know I am putting in some pasture fence. My property is long and narrow. On one side I have a drainage ditch and on the other woods. My concern is when a horse dies I need to get a backhoe to the back of the property. I am putting in 10' gates and leaving about 10-12' around the outside of the fence. How wide is a backhoe big enough to dig a 6'-8' deep hole?

Keep in mind they haul full sized backhoe loaders on trailers without wide load permits. The tractors are 102" or less wide.

2nd thing is slope of trench / hole at 6-8 ft you have to tapper it back some to be safe

Thanks for the info. I will have to see how busy I am the next time a horse goes down. If the weather is good and I don't have a list of projects I might just rent a hoe and dig myself other wise I will just hire out an operator. The last hole only cost me $75 so my learning to dig a hole that deep safely might not be worth the money.

If the only need for a backhoe is for burials I would definately hire it out. Sounds very depressing, not a fun project.
