JD 5425 w/542 Loader
I just bought a JD 5425 tractor and am looking at getting a Backhoe attachment for general work around the farm. The JD dealer quoted me $9K for a new JD model, but also stated that they do not ever see a used unit come back without a tractor. $9K is outside of what i want to spend so i started to look around for a used unit, not many around.

I scanned the web and saw that Woods, Bush Hog, and a few other companies make aftermarket backhoe attachments but have not been able to find any comparisons of units. Can anyone tell me their experiences, good and bad, with their backhoe attachment.

Thanks for any comments and recommendations you can provide.

I just bought a 5525 that came with a backhoe ... from what I'm told be careful when getting a hoe .. simple 3 point can cause damage to the tractor. I have been told its best to get the subframe mounted unit.

I have a Woods Groundbreaker BH-70x backhoe that I bought new with my Kioti CK30. Originally, I started talking to my dealer about the Woods bh over the Kioti bh because I wanted a thumb. I'm glad that's the way I went, it's built very tough and heavy duty and goes on and off with ease.

My dealer told me, and now having seen them both I agree, that the Woods bh has a much beefier 4 point sub frame mount and that's why he preferred it.

When I was shopping for my tractor, I looked at the Farmall 31 at the Case dealer. They had one sitting there and it had the Woods BH-70x bh on it as well. When I asked him if it made any difference in price over the Case bh, he said he didn't know because they would never put one on a tractor and the Woods was a much better bh.

I believe you'd be looking at the Woods BH-90x with a 9ft digging depth. I'd be surprised if it was much less than $9K installed, but you may have better luck finding one used, especially if the color doesn't matter to you.

If you look back several pages here on the private party ads, member "flyingcow" has/had a BX90 with thumb for sale. Looked very nice, you just need a can of green spray paint. :D:laughing:

Don't know if it's still for sale, worth a message to him......

Good luck!

Machinefinder has a 2007 JD model 48 for $5400 and a 2010 JD model 49 for $7500. There may be more. These came up on the first page of "recent" ads.

Make sure that you get one with the sub-frame. 3pt's are not built for heavy work.
A post several years ago on here showed pic's of a rear end housing top link bracket that broke off a 3 pt of the rear end of I believe an L3400. Expensive repair!

Any idea the weight of the 49 model?

For that 9k price tag I would honestly buy a standalone TLB (backhoe). Right now they are pretty hard to get rid of at auction around our area, and you can get some GREAT deals on machines that will do twice the work of a add-on hoe for your 5425. Granted, you will then have 2 machines to store and upkeep. Just my .02$

Does that $9k include:
BH
Subframe
Stabilizers
Pads
All hydraulic work, etc
Dealer install
Dealer delivery
Dealer warranty
Dealer support
Dealer loyalty?

I opted for a Woods BH70X w/ subframe for my little used '07 B7610 in '09. It cost about what my tractor cost. It'll pick my tractor up easily. It is built MUCH heavier than what Kubota was offering for the B7610. I had also wanted a 1 vehicle solution.
That written now I'd go for a two vehicle solution with a mini-ex being the second since my prime residence is changing from a 1/4 acre lot in Virginia to a 73 acre lot with 5,500 sq ft of shop space.

There's the seminal thread:http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/buying-pricing-comparisons/32962-tractor-can-break-half.html

But MOST breaking in half was not at the 3pt, but rather at the bell housing.

Even this was later attributed to something else

Thanks for the input. Quite a few people have stated the same idea, i have looked around here and anything (TLB) that looks like it has any life left is in the 18000 and up price range. I saw a couple of low teen prices, but the equipment look beat to sh--.
