Hi, i have been looking to get my hands on a old backhoe attachment for my L2501, and really don't want to pay $10,000 plus in my location for a new one and there is basically no opportunity at a used one. So i put out an ad looking for a 3pt backhoe working or not. I thought if i could get the steel and construction to work with, i could redo the hydraulics and make a sub frame or modify one to accept a backhoe. I understand the amount of work to this but I only plan to use it myself for personal projects and helpout family.

So a backhoe from kubota or aftermarket for my tractor would dig around 7-8 feet and weigh between 800 and 1000 pounds.

So, an elderly gentleman contact me and said he has a 3pt backhoe off a old massey tractor 50hp cat1 hitch. Don't know anything about the tractor or the backhoe or if its original to the tractor. So he sent me some photos and i'm thinking to myself i can make it work but don't know any info the backhoe. The only thing he knew is the bucket is a 15" bucket. So maybe someone see it and know a model or have some insight into what i'm looking into. Also i know pictures can be deceiving, and hes 2 hours away. Planning on going to look at the backhoe on Tuesday.

He also said, the last time he used it was 2 years ago and everything worked and only wants between $1000 to $1500 for it. So to me its definitely in a range id be satisfied and in somewhat working condition. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Looks like a pretty heavy duty unit, just based on the rods. Without any measurements or anything else for reference I am going to say this is for a 40+hp tractor, and too big for your L2501 IMO. My Woods 650/Kubota B/L4520B is a heavy little unit - this sucker is going to be near 1500lbs.

Thanks for the reply, I think you right that it's a bigger unit, I guess I'll find out tomorrow what size is once I see it. I dont think its gonna be a perfect fit. But it's more what I'm getting for the price I think.

I think the weight is what will be the restriction. The aftermarket unit is around 1000#, so if I can the unit to around 1200#, I think the tractor can handle it. Looking at it I'm thinking that probably has a 10ft depth so if I cut it back to 7.5 to 8ft. Again until I see it in person it's hard to know what your looking. I dont know a model, I did see a 60 on front of it that's painted over. This could be a 2000+# unit. So that's way to beefy. Unless someone knows the model or specs or it.

Ok so i think i've figured out what the backhoe is. Its a model 60 Kelly backhoe with a 10' depth originally. But it seems that the the boom the bucket is attached to is homemade and not original. I cannot the seller and he said he bought the tractor with the backhoe and only used a few times, everything worked 2 years ago. He said the original owner said he had to make up a lot of the stuff, but from what i can see is the boom and bucket and possibly different rams.

I clearly know this backhoe is to big for my tractor has it is. But i plan to cut it back has far has possible where 3 point is and add subframe. The next problem is i cant find a posted weight of the backhoe. So i assuming with 10" reach its probably around 1200 lbs or more originally. But once i cut away the 3 point attachment steel which looks heavy and cut the bucket boom shorter has it seems longer than original and probably not has heavy. I'll have some weight gone but still probably to much, so i assuming ill have to shorten or get another rectangular beam for the main boom and shorten everything to around 8' depth. I think weight wise then it should be find.

But my only worries then is that if all the rams are good and everything is mounted securely. Can the rams be to power or large for the backhoe and cause any problem with my tractor other the ability to possibly lift the machine.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, everyone has different views and knowledge. So, I would love all the help provided. I add a photo or what it should look like originally with the bucket boom.

Well i viewed the backhoe and its in pretty bad shape. The front boom has filled with water, froze and swelled the boom. Also all the hydraulics is mismatched and and looks like the rams have been cut and shorten. Also instead of welding in nipples, they just welded the hoses right to the rams. Overall a lot of shotty repair work over the years. So i think in the coming months i'm going to work towards building my backhoe.

If you pay $1000 for it, you might get a few components that make it worthwhile (outriggers, bucket, scrap steep, control valve body, frame, swing cylinder). If you want to cut it down and rebuild it as a smaller unit, take measurements off of another unit so you don't have to reinvent the geometry. Ideally, your geometry is going to want to use off-the-shelf cylinder sizes (ie: Princess Auto).
