I need some help. I am trying to determine the cause of my tractor losing power, choking out, and what seems to be a burning smell coming from the tractor when trying to go up a grade. The grade isn't huge and there is no load other than a ballast box while trying to climb up my driveway.

Of course this happens when I need it most. Any suggestions?

Well, I'd start with the simple things first.

Is fuel getting to the engine properly? Is there air in the lines, have you run out of fuel? Is the fuel filter clean? Is the air filter clean?

What smells like it is burning? Does it smell like oil, rubber, electrical or something else?

Provide some more detail and we will try to help out.

Thanks,
Kevin

I am going to take a look at the fuel filter this weekend. It seems to be some sort of strainer type of filter that you take apart and clean..correct? I will check the air filter also. I don't think there is air in the lines.

I have never run out of fuel. Could it possibly be overfueled? I tend to fill it almost to the top. Maybe I am blocking air intake into the tank?

I don't know for sure if I am smelling burning or just fuel. I do get some black smoke from the exhaust when this happens. I shut it down right away so I don't have to many more details. On level ground it seems to operate fine.

It doesnt matter if I am in high or low. Same results.

sounds like you are burning fuel Rich, loss of power, black smoke when under load .

Is this a new condition? A friend got a 7500 HST recently and his land is mostly flat and everything was fine - but when he tried to go up some hills, he noticed it bog down. He stepping down on the pedal - but with an HST that's like shifting into a higher gear - he found it worked better to back off the pedal a bit but keep the rpms up with the hand throttle. If your engine is making black smoke, it's getting plenty of fuel.

As always, prompty cheerful refund if info is bogus /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I know this is gonna sound stupid but...is the parking brake off?
It does sound like your getting plenty of fuel, also check the air filter for being clogged and the inner filter also, if you have not changed these out in a long time then it maybe due.

Black smoke from the exhaust indicates the engine is lugging down.

With a gas powered automobile with an automatic transmission we learn to give it more gas when it slows on a hill. With a hydrostatic transmission it works just the opposite. When it starts lugging on a hill back off the hydro pedal until the black smoke stops. Took me a long time to get used to that and it is counter-intuitive but that is the way a hydro works.

Try the same hill and keep easing up on the pedal and it will keep going. Slower, but it will keep moving. Listen to the RPM's. It is OK if they drop a little but you can tell when they drop significantly and that is time to let up.

A little black smoke is not a big deal, just means all the fuel is not getting burned and gives you a clue that the engine is overloaded.

check to be sure the 3 point lift lever is not stuck in the engaged position. causing the hydraulic system to dead head robbing rpm and power.
