Is it normal for the alternator light to come on at an idle and then go out when over 1000 rpm. Tractor runs great and no other charging problems. Love the discussion board!!!!!!!! Have solved two questions already in the last two months. thanks.

My alternator light came on my excavator the other day actually. It would almost go out at higher idle. Well long story short I tightened the alternator belt some and NO light now. Maybe will work for you,,,,that's what it sounds like to me.

I tightened the alternator belt, it was a little loose, but saddly to say it didn' fix the light coming on at idle up to 1000 rpm. Could it possibly be a diode going out?
Thanks.

Tough call now. Have you put a electric meter on your charging system to see if it maintains a steady voltage reading? It may be loose connection somewhere also or even your battery. Without being there myself it's hard to say. You will find it. Goodluck and let us know what is happening.

Make sure your idle speed is no less than about 850 - 900 RPM's. You can adjust the idle speed on the rod by your right knee. Make sure your connections at your battery are real clean too, as resistance between the two will cause a drop in charge rate. May just be your idle speed though.

Cleaned the battery terminals (were already fairly clean), cleaned the alternator bullet connectors, and checked the battery voltage. At an idle, 900 rpm, the voltage stays pretty much steady, about 12.76 volts. As the engine speed increases, the volts increase, up to 14.54 volts at 2000rpm and then stays there which would mean to me that the voltage regulator is working and that alternator is charging. I think that i am not going to worry about it, unless it developes a problem of not keeping the battery charged.

thanks for the advise!
Nice to be in KUBOTA HEAVEN!!!!

I think you have a dynamo charger on there, and they are pretty solid. If you unplug the two bullets going into the dynamo. Grey/grey, or white/white. Using AC meter, you should be getting well over 20 AC volts out of it. Don't be concerned. It sounds as if it is operating well. Only other possible thing, is by the rate of high DC charge you mentioned.....over 14 DC....it may be overcharging. Generally are running in the low to mid 13's on DC output. Could be pulling volts from somewhere. Double check that ground strap too just for kicks, egh?
