Hey all. Picked up an old b414 a week or so ago that's been sitting for a couple years. Got it running but having some issues with the clutch and transmission. Tractor is currently stuck in neutral.

The shifter won't enter any gear, running or not. I can move it left or right but can't get it to take any gear.

The clutch pedal moves freely, when looking through the access under the tractor it slides properly along the shaft but it only goes far enough ahead to touch the pressure plate then return. Fingers of the pressure plate seem to move freely enough.

I'm wondering if the 2 are related or if I have a couple issues. Is my clutch stuck to the flywheel not allowing it to travel back to where the clutch pedal can engage it or is the shaft supposed to move forward when in gear allowing the clutch to access the pressure plate? And as far as being stuck in neutral, I'm guessing I need to pull the top to see what's going on inside? Thoughts?

Not familiar at all with the B414, but have read in threads on other sites, where the shifting railson other models have been stuck from rust/corrosion from setting. May be a simple fix of just removing the top, and cleaning up the rails. Be forewarned to be careful when taking apart, due to the detent balls flying into Perky's Woods... That seemed to be the fix on those that wrote having the same problem.

Have you checked the differential oil..?? I'm sure you'll see if water has gotten into it, if you pull the top. Just thinking if moisture has been in there a while, and not run, it could have things rusted up in there. One way to find out...

The 414 is a center shift, so it is easy to remove the top cover where the shifter is and see if the transmission will shift without the shifter in place.

If the is the case then the shifter lever or the shift rails are the issue. If not then it’s internal to the transmission.

Yea, looks like either condensation or some small water leak has let water in so I'm thinking I'm going to need to pop the top off and dig in. Only issue is I think I need to pull the hydraulic tank and top of the 3pt just to access a couple of the bolts. Probably going to be a PITA to get at it. Hopefully some nice weather this weekend so I can dig into it. Thanks

I would pull the shifter lever first to see if it is broken and to see if you can move the rails with a screwdriver/bar.

well haven't had a chance to mess with it but went out last night to see if I could roll it into my car port before the snow storm hit today and the transmission is frozen. Everything is in neutral as usual but it won't roll (acting like it's in gear). my guess is there is water in there freezing it all up. So I'm thinking water in the transmission caused rust, causing my shifting issue. Hopefully things warm up by the weekend and I can get it in under cover and get it taken apart. Going to do a full fluid change once I get it freed up.

Managed to get the shifter moving again today. Guessing just a little ceased up from sitting. Now if I could figure out my clutch pedal issue I'd be mobile with it. Any thoughts on that?

I've spent a full can worth of penetrating fluid in the access under the tractor, on the pressure plate/clutch/flywheel and things just aren't freeing up.

Here's a link to a video on YouTube that shows what it's doing/not doing when I press the pedal.

Broken spring(s)..?? The one upwards to the left appears to release some, but limited travel due to the rest of the plate mechanism holding it. The one you pried beside/against doesn't move a bit. Maybe wedge the pedal down, then take your pry, and try to get in front of that finger, and see if it will move back. If it won't, rotate the flywheel a bit, until you can see behind that finger, and see if the spring is broken. Not sure if that is possible or not.

If that spring is broken, it won't let the clutch. pressure plate fully release, and drag. You could rotate on around, and check the other finger spring, but if that one is broken, you'll need to split the tractor, and replace anyway.

That is a two stage clutch. one for drive and one for the pto being the second stage.

I saw that was an option, when looking at the Case/IH parts catalog. I've never had, or seen one with it on them. Would a I&T manual go through the adjustment procedure for a two stage clutch..?? Or, should he be looking for a IH Blue Ribbon manual..??
