2009 Massey Ferguson GC2400
This morning I was rototilling with the '98 B2400 that my father in law owns (and lets me use for free in exchange for doing repairs/maintenance on it:D ) and while turning a corner the tractor started to lose power, so quickly I stepped on the clutch and lifted the tiller all of the way up and bedore I knew it, it died. So I got off and checked for oil(on full line), coolant(starts to burp as soon as cap is turned), rock jammed in tiller(not), fuel (1/2tank) everything. Everything checked out OK. So try to restart and it fires immediately and runs smoothly for about 2-3 seconds and dies again, have tried numerous times and still will not stay running.

Any ideas?

After doing some other searches I checked the fuel shut off solenoid fuse and it was blown, replaced with another fuse and it started immediately and ran like a champ for about 10 minutes then same story.

I suspect the shut off solenoid is gone and am going to replace it as soon as I can order one in.

Just curious why would you think the fuel SHUT OFF solenoid is your problem?? It only activates to shut off the fuel your symptom would be, if it or the fuse were bad you would not be able to stop the engine using the key to off?he solenoid only activates to turn off the engine. KennyV.

Are you sure of that? If you turn off the key and the solenoid goes on you will have a dead battery after a while unless it was on a timer, which I doubt. Most valves I've seen are actually fuel run solenoids. Usually when an engine keeps running with the key off the solenoid is mechanically stuck.

That痴 right it is a timer relay that controls the shut off solenoid, simple to check, remove your engine cover and watch what it dose when you turn the key off after about 5 seconds it releases KennyV.
PS there are also fuel hold ON solenoids they are more costly and normally require a pull and hold winding in the same solenoid if your engine has a Murphy gage system or a monitoring emergency shutdown system (like a stationary, unattended, engine) I would suspect it to have a fule hold ON system

That's interesting, I wouldn't have thought that. My L3400 has a fuel on relay with dual coils (according to service manual print). That's the same setup my Dodge Cummins has.

I guess if you were on a hill and pushed the clutch in and got rolling and then let the clutch out it could start up without a key.

Yes it would... unless it was a GST...
Didn't realize Dodge Ram had that setup... KennyV.

Finally got home to check my shop manual and checked the wiring diagram and it does not show any type of timer in the circuit just a straight wire to the key switch and ground.

Plus the electrical diagnostic page says that if tractor will not start that the shut off solenoid need replacing.

Keep us posted on the fix. I hope it is an easy one.

Installed the new solenoid and a new 5amp fuse, cranked it up and so far has ran for 2 hours rototilling in some hard ground.

Seems to have fixed that problem, now onto the next one, steering box mouting bolts going into the top of the transmission housing have stripped out and the steering box is flopping around loose. Couldn't find any M12x1.25 Helicoils so I got some 1/2NF's and am about to start on that project and if I get that done I might start on the bevel case oil seal that is leaking on the front left side axle housing. Oh the joys of buying used....

By the way other than these few minor glitches the tractor runs and drives awesome even for a 10year old unit with almost 1300hrs on it (used to be owned by a landscaper).

Your getting to know your tractor better.:)

Nice going. I have a 25 year old Ford 1910 with 1250 hours that still runs great. I got it new and so far have rebuilt the fuel injection pump and changed injectors and glow plugs. New seals on the FEL cyinders and valve. Not too bad really.

Tractors do seem to last for a long time.

Turns out the steering box mounting bolts just go through a steel plate with nuts welded on the back, so I just drilled the threads out, put longer bolts in with nylock nuts and cleaned everything up.

It's supposed to rain/snow tomorrow so maybe I can get the bevel case seal done, being as I won't want to be outside.
