My 'Bota starts cold every single time -- even in the coldest of the cold weather we get in Central IL. However, I can't get it to start again during any season once it's warmed up and I turn it off. It won't fire/turn over/anything. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

That is strange. It sounds like a saftey switch is sticking. Do you have dash lights come on when you turn the key after it is warmed up? There is a fusable link above the starter that would shut off all electrics, check to see if it is installed good and snug. If you do have lights, it is probably one of the saftey switches sticking. Hope this helps.

Yeah, the dash lights come on; I just get no "action" at all with the engine. This is a huge frustration, because I need to start my tractor and leave it on for the entire day without turning it off.

(As an aside, the whole starting mechanism is a little odd, even when cold. I keep the transmission in low, turn the key, then move it to N and a little past to get it to start. I was told this was a safety feature, but I'm not so sure. Is that normal?)

With the key turned to the "start" position, have you tried moving the shift lever to see if there isn't a position it'll start? Sounds a bit like a switch out of adjustment.

Thanks, and yes, I've tried every key combination and shift lever combination. I'm positive that what works when the engine's cold doesn't work when it's warm.

I'm wondering if I'm misunderstanding some of the nuances of a diesel and/or HST engine....

I have the bx-1500, which has safetys on the range selector. You must have the pto in neutral. If you need to play with the lever something is wrong. You do not address if it is new, used, or just started this problem. Look under the fenders, the switches are easy to see and move the levers to check operation. You need an ohmeter to test the switch function. I think the idea of a bad switch is valid. Most of the Kubotas larger than a BX have switch on the clutch pedal.

Illiniwek:

For sure the neutral start interlock switch is not adjusted correctly. There is a bit of a complex mechanism associated with the switch. First I would try getting a squirt of WD40 in there. It is under the seat on the right side of the trans. You can identify the area by the wire leading to the switch. You will see all the levers in there. Lube it up a bit. I had trouble with hard shifting on the range lever when warm, and a quick spray solved the problem.

The service manual has specs on how to adjust the switch. You should only be able to start when the range lever is centered in neutral, no offset at all.

Try adjusting it or have the dealer look at if if the WD40 doesn't help.

Are you mashin' down on the clutch?
Is the PTO in neutral?
Two of the things many (if not all) of us on the TBN have done once, twice or five times.
It's WAY too easy to do.

I would agree with techman that the switch is out of adjustment. Both of the saftey switch brackets (PTO and Netural) have come loose on me. To test these just unplug and short with buss wire. This will allow it to start in any gear range. Keep in mind that you are bypassing a saftey feature.

I agree with everyone else, have the swithced checked thoroughly, something is out of adjustment if you have to play with it.

One other thing, though. I had something like this happen when i first got it...turned out to be a bad ground at the battery, so check your connections as well.
