Any thoughts on these two machines? I'm torn between the two. The B21 only has 21hp but it appears to be a heavier duty rig with great flow from the pump?

JimMorrissey,

In my opinion, if you're doing mostly excavation type work making heavy use of the backhoe, go for the B21. That's what it's designed for. I think it's designed for constant contractor use rather than agricultural/estate use like the rest of the B series. If you're going to use it for a mix of conventional "tractor work" (box blading, tiilling, mowing, period backhoe use) then the distinction might get a litte blurred. If you need a mid-PTO, then I think your choice is the B2910.

I probably would've opted for the B21 back when I bought my B2910 except that the FOPS wouldn't let me park it in our garage. The folding ROPS of the B2910 lets it fit in without a problem.

I think the B21 is a bit pricier than a B2910 with loader and backhoe, isn't it?

Rick,

Yes it is a bit more $. I did not know that the B21 didn't have a mid PTO....However, I'm not sure I need one. I'll prob just drag a rear mower around. I would never be able to run a front snowblower though...hummmm.

I do wonder about the power of the B21 vs. the 2910. The 2910 has a substantially more powerful engine and the the B21 appears to have a much stonger backbone. I'd like to think the Kubota didn't under power the B21 in the name of $10,000 more for the L35. $36,000 for a L35 is a bit much for me, and my wife, the check writer.

If I had to do it over again I would go with the B-21. It is built much better than the 2910. I had a B-20 and as far as pulling an implement there is not much difference as far as power is concerned. The loader on the B21 and its hydraulics are better, although the bucket is a little smaller on the B-21. The 2910 is more comfortable to run, with the seat and the arm rest. The cruise control is nice to if you are using a mower, it less tiring on the foot. There is no comparison on the backhoe mounting. The sub frame on the B21 is MUCH stronger than the 3 point hitch of a 2910. I guess it would matter on the type of work you are going to use it for. If you will be using it every day as in earning a living with it and putting alot of hours on it I would get the B21, but if you are just going to use it around your home for general work the 2910 does a good job. I use my 2910 to earn my living with in lawn installments and wish I would have gone with the B21 or a L series tractor just because they are heavier built. I think the B21 tractor without the backhoe out weighs the 2910 quite a bit. They are both excellent tractors it just depends on how you are going to use it.

Jim, when the B-21 came to the market about 20 years ago it was built off the B-2150 chassis which then became the B-2710 and then along came the 2910 and the latest 7800 with the later two being 30 engine horsepower. The B-21 or originally B-20 was the first mini four wheel drive TLB built for this market. It is meant as a TLB first not a yard utility tractor as the loader doesn't come off and if you look at the frame it is built like a brick S#!$% house. The 2910 is a more versatile unit that is meant for the everyday life of a homeowner.

Hi Jim,

As others have said the B21 is built strong for commercial and rental use and mine continues to surprise me after 5 years of use. There are a couple of notable differences that that might limit home use for some. The B21 does not have a mid-PTO, the loader can not be removed and the PTO is only rated at 13.5 hp. On the plus side the B21 is built heavy duty, has a FOPS (Falling Object Protection System), stronger hydraulics, an extreme frame, great loader capacity for it’s size and a strong backhoe with a great mounting system that keeps it close to the operators platform.

Mine was bought for use at some mountain property and used for backhoe/loader work and gravel road maintenance exclusively. We have now bought another property that requires PTO implements and I was concerned about the minimal PTO hp. So far so good, while using a 4’ rotary mower to cut 8-10 acres. Some areas had growth taller than the tractor and I am not sure if I should not have gotten a 5’ mower for my cutting needs. A 4’ tiller has tilled about an acre of Georgia red clay that has not yet baked into its summer brick mode without problem.

My experience has been that even with lower horsepower ratings the B21 rarely has been lacking in power. It may be that its extra weight transfers the power to the ground more efficiently than a lighter tractor. I can’t say if Kubota was conservative in its published power and hydraulic ratings because of the intended commercial and rental market for the B21 but I am confident that my particular tractor has exceeded the published ratings during actual use. By the way, hit 1000 hours this week and the tractor has never been in the shop.

Jim,

Do you have trees and slopes to deal with?

The B21 looks like a nice machine. Still . personally,I would stick with my B2910 TLB for my needs. I built a light duty FOPS for my B2910 that is a little less limiting than the square design on the B21. Gets between trees easier I think, especially when the tractor is leaning a bit.

Like was said above, the B2910 is more general purpose and a little less heavy duty, but still a pretty good work horse from what I can see. I have 420 hours on mine and it will turn two at the end of this month. About 410 of those hours have been Loader/backhoe/box blade work.

I don't use the mid PTO...but even then...I would not trade what I have for the B21. Nice being able to take the loader off when I want to, and having the extra HP sure doesn't hurt I bet. Still, the loader is not as strong maybe, and the frame is not as robust perhaps...but for me it is adequate. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well, I had my first reply to this thread deleted. I guess strong opinions about good equipment are subersive. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Lots of good information here about the B21. I'd still like to have been able to get one even though I am quite happy with my B7610.

One comment I have is the single seat for the tractor and backhoe. The single seat makes the overall length shorter with the backhoe. Less ponderous with the backhoe on, in both length and weight position.

It may be an illusion but the B21 seemed more squat to me that the B7800 and my B7610. I felt more comfortable on slopes with the B21. Maybe it isn't that it is lower, it is wider?

I wonder if Kubota is working on a new version of the B-21 and for that matter the L-35. Time for some upgrades!

My post was not deleted. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I had posted a reply to the same question in another forum here on TBN and then looked here in "Kubota Owning/Operating" not knowing I had read two threads with the same query. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I am past the time limit to edit my original post. So, I am posting this retraction instead.

I offer my apology to the moderators and Muhammad who looked into this matter for me.
