It's no big deal to adjust valves on a pushrod engine.
Another way of identifying the valves is to rotate the engine with the valve cover off. For each cylinder, you will see a valve open and close then immediately the second valve will start to open. The valve that opened and closed first is the exhaust.
Tip: When setting valve clearance, you want to make sure the lifter is not on any of the surfaces of a cam lobe that make up the lifting portion of it. With the cylinder at TDC on a power stroke, both valves can be set at one time. However, this is not the ideal place to set valve clearance nor is it all that easy to find. The best place to set clearance is when the lifter is 180 degrees away from the peak of the cam lobe and there is an easy way to do this. Rotate the engine till the exhaust valve just starts to open. Adjust the intake valve clearance in this position. Rotate the engine until the intake valve has just finished closing--then adjust the exhaust valve. That way you are sure that the lifter was on what is called the base circle of the cam.
