I have a B1550 that when under load is blowing dark smoke out the exhaust and a mist out the breather tube. I think that is a sign of worn rings and may need an engine overhaul. Has anyone done this and what could I expect to pay a dealer to complete this task. Thanks

I certainly wouldn't jump to that conclusion from blowing black smoke. For starters a dealer overhaul will probably start at around $1,000. Almost any diesel will blow black smoke if the engine is allowed to "lug". Maybe you just need to gear down. Other reasons are dirty air cleaner, clogged muffler, bad/dirty injectors, bad/contaminated fuel/tank and, I'm sure, a bunch of others I haven't thought of.

How many hours are on it?

About 850 hours. I have a feeling that it wasnt maintained very well.

I'd be all over that fuel system before putting anymore time on the machine. Unless you've got metal in the crankcase oil, I'd almost guarantee that there's an injector/ pump problem, which is all related to garbage in the system. If the mist is fuel rather than coolant, clean the tank, filter and lines and send out the pump and injectors to a pro for analysis and /or repair. I broke a crank which was related to one bad injector and several contributing problems. Pump rebuild and two injectors about $500. SteveV

JBCat,
It sounds like your engine may still be a long way from needing a rebuild.

I've had to rebuild my older model 16hp B7100 engine (no hour meter) due to bad compression rings on two of the three cylinders. It started with fairly heavy smoke/mist coming out of the breather tube (shortly after I bought the tractor), then progressed to oil droplets, then a fairly steady stream of oil. Other than the compression rings the rest of the engine was in excellent condition.

I'm pretty sure that my engine condition was caused by an overheated engine that resulted from the wrong mixture of antifreeze (probably 100%) running in a thermo-siphon type cooling system that is supposed to have a 50/50 max mixture.

Hope this helps,
Kelvin
