The mower is a John Deere 240, serial, M00240H478560 that someone replaced original engine with this engine. The engine is Briggs and Stratton 422707-1521-01 L engine opposed cylinders. Can the PTO end crankshaft seal be replaced from the outside (as opposed to splitting the cases)? Anyone have experience with this engine? The engine is leaking oil all over the belts on the bottom of the mower. Thanks in advance. bjr

Yes, it can be replaced from the outside. Remove the bottom pulley. Use a awl to poke a hole in the seal and then a pick to pull it out. Or drill a small hole in the seal and put in a screw and try to pull it out. Maybe a screw on each side. Make sure the shaft is free of rust and sharp spots when installing new seal. Tape around shaft will protect the seal too.
