B21 KUBOTA
I Have a b21 kubota and would like to get a three point chipper, But once I start looking it seem like a decent one
requires more that 13.5 pto hp --- Any good idea's or should I look for a stand alone chipper?
--I have about 40 acres that have a been left alone for the last 30 years, lots of dead spuce and hemlock. -- hard to burn this much. --- Thanks

I have a petrol stand alone chinese chipper with a 13hp engine on it, while it's good for the price etc, it only handles 3.5 inch (clean)max, if you have 40 acres to clear, you want a BIG chipper, commercial style, so forget the B21, except for pushing up piles. You could probably pick up a secondhand unit, diesel/hydraulic, you are going to be throwing some work at it for some time, so don't skimp out and get a small one, bigger is better, because you will curse if you have to go slow with it.

I have the Bearcat CH5540 5" capacity (25hp pto min) that I use behind my Ford 8N, works well. But, I only chip green material with it. The dead stuff will dull blades faster, so anything dead gets burned. Bearcat does have a smaller CH45540 pto chipper, but do you really want to run that much dead stuff through it? Philip.

100 td has the answer...go with a used commercial chipper...or, if you're not in too much of a hurry, rent one every few weekends.
If you rent, the main thing is good preparation. Have the stuff you want to chip staged so when you do rent, all you do is chip.

PTO chippers, for most of us TBNers (me, for example!), are used for the occasional yard clean up such as branches and limbs downed over the winter.
I've got a Woods 5000 (actually made by Bearcat, BTW) and mine is a chipper/shredder. I use the shredder more then the chipper. It's good for 5" if the branch is straight. Also, per Woods, the PTO HP requirements are 15-40 HP. I ran it quite well with 24 PTO HP, but I wouldn't want much less then that.

If you don't want to burn, rent or rot.
Unless you have a good use for all the chips I expect you will soon find that chipping is not always a pleasant chore, especially with a small chipper.

I use mine with my M4700 when I need mulch and have tree remains near the house.

I agree with all the previous posters. I went out and got a used 3-pt chipper off Craig's List after we had a epic snowstorm in October four years ago. The storm devastated our area, because the leaves hadn't fallen yet, and the snow's weigh on them tore many big limbs and trees down. Half of the state had no electric power for a week. I had so much tree clean up to do at my place that I decided to be ready for the next one. Long story short, the chipper still sits in my yard--unused. If you still want a 3-pt chipper, you should know that the better models are the bigger ones that have a power feed. Mine has no power feed, and during a test with it, I found that chipping can a little tedious--you have to basically hand-feed the brush.

I cut up to 10 cord of wood a year and chip the brush to keep property nice.i had a top feeding salsco 4 inch it worked really well but you had to cut crotches out to get it through. I sold it and bought a large self feeding salsco never looked back it eats everything i touch to the feed rolls i love it
My bx wouldnt lift the new one well it was a struggle so i bought a bigger tractor.
Make sure your machine will lift it.as far as pto horse power my opinion if your tractor will get it spinning your good to go .dont feed it to max capacity and it will work fine.
On my gravity feed machine if i chipped a 4 inch stick i cut it shorter .a long one would die or stall machine.on one with feeder it will only feed as fast as the feed rolls turn the rpm on tractor never change

My old B8200 was similar powerwise to a B21. I would advise against it; just not enough PTO HP. I have a 40HP tractor now; it powers my Bearcat shipper/shredder easily.

The B8200/B20/B21 are awesome tractors! But, alas, they have marginal PTO HP.

I've have a Bearcat 70774 (5 in cap) for several years. Originally hung off the back of my B1700 with 13 pto hp. The tractor would run it but I had to be careful not to feed it to quickly as 13 hp really wasn't sufficient. I now have a B2650 with 19.5 pto hp and it runs the chipper/shredder much better but 25-30hp would be ideal
. As mentioned previously by another if your tractor can spin it will work as they have large flywheels to carry the momentum but more hp is better.

Hey, thanks to everyone for there input, I have started watching craigs list for a used stand alone
unit. ---Hoping to find an old unit that needs some repair, I used be pretty good with a wrench.
---Yes a self feeding unit seems like its a must.
Before winter set in i have cleaned up a lot of dead stuff and had a fire for three days. Anything hardwood
gets cut up for fire wood even if its a 1" in dia. ---I find a lot of hemlock that been dead for years and the
branches are still hard and dry but the trunk will be punky. It's hard to remove the branches. You would think that they would snap off, some do but most have to be cut. You end up with a huge pile. The trunk doesn't like to burn very good and thats why a chipper would be nice. ----Not to mention it might come in handy if the wife give you trouble!!---- Only kidding. ---Thanks to all again.
