Average Oil Change Cost

Hi,
I'm a student working on a project for school and I was just trying to figure out the average cost of an oil change for heavy equipment. First of all how much do you pay for an oil change on your heavy equipment and what is the capacity of the oil that is added. Second of all how often do you change the oil in your heavy equipment. Finally how many hours do you have on your equipment and how long on average do you keep your heavy equipment before you either trade it in or get a new piece of equipment.

There's a lot of variation in what someone considers heavy equipment. You might want to specify what type of equipment your talking about, size, etc to narrow your replies.

Not really too particular with size necessarily just trying to get a pretty good idea of an average and if I had to narrow it down I would say equipment larger than bobcats or skidsteers in general something like tractors, bulldozers, front-end loaders etc.

I had an old excavator took 100 gal to change the hydraulic 4gal for engine oil. I quess it would depend on year, type, size, model any extra mods and so on.

Just a thought. I suspect that the responses you get here are going to be all over the ball park and will not be standardized; e.g., labor charges if the respondents do it themselves versus by the dealer, type/size of equipment, etc. Also, many TBN members are not using their tractors for commercial purposes. For example, some change oil based on time rather than hours of use because they don't put that many hours on their tractors during the year.

In order to get standardized responses, you could visit with service managers at equipment dealers. I suspect that most would be willing to provide help to a student.

While you are there, you could ask someone in sales about the ages/hours of use that they see on the equipment that they take as trade-ins. You could also "sample" hours of use by looking at the equipment offered at

Of course, the equipment at the dealers and at Tractorhouse may have had several owners.

some people consider a scut heqvy equipment. some consider a farm/utility or ag tractor HE.

a small tractor can have as lil as 5qts on a change.. and some might use 15 quarts... get to big engine and you see 10 gallons!

then there is oil brand.. whether you buy in quarts, gallons pails or drums?

sale back the scope of your questions.. or targetr specific sizes..e tc. less variables.. etc.
