Hello!

Recently bought a 1968 MF180 with Multi-Power and Independent PTO (236 diesel).
As part of a general maintenance effort, I'm trying to replace the filter cartridge that's attached to the bottom of the auxiliary hydraulic pump.

How do you access the filter???

I've removed the transmission right side cover (the one with response control) but any internal access is blocked by the Ferguson lift pump's pressure control. I can't even see the auxiliary pump from there.

I can't remove the transmission left side cover, because of the rigid hydraulic lines that are attached to it from the inside.

Besides removing the top lift cover (big job!) is there a simple way to replace the dang filter?

Thanks!

I looked in my 180 Service manual (Jensales reprint), and no where does it say how to replace that filter. I did replace mine several years ago, but, the aux. pump had grenaded, and needed to tear it down to replace it. For some reason, I'm thinking the bolts that hold the filter on are cross drilled through the heads of the bolts, and had mechanics wire through them, as a locking device.

Yeah, you're right about a big job with the trans cover. And if you do decide to remove it, be very careful when you do. Linkages on the right side, sitting in the seat, under the cover need to be disconnected, before removing the cover completely. That little dashpot is VERY expensive..!!

If you don't have a factory manual, I'd suggest getting one. I&T's are ok for minor stuff, but that's about it...

Even if the OEM manual doesn't have anything on replacing the filter, all the adjustments after taking the top off, is worth it.

Thanks DJ54!

Well, I do have the OEM service manual, but like you say it doesn't show anything about that filter.

I was afraid that an old clogged filter would kill the pump.
Now I've cut the return line from the aux spool valve (the lower of the two lines that enter the left side cover) and hooked a vacuum gauge to it. It shows 9'' Hg vacuum when I rev the engine at 1700 rpm with tranny cold (32F), and barely 2'' Hg with the tranny warmed up.
So it doesn't seem that the filter is clogged, after all.

So I guess I will just let it be for now!

To improve filtration, I've installed an external filter unit (spin-on type) in line with the return line from the aux spool valve. The cartridge is rated for 10um so it should keep the oil spanking clean.

I like to have a filter in line with the aux return, to catch any dirt from the attachment before it gets into the tranny.

Tonight will be my first snow plow with the 180!!! :D
