We use Ritchie Thirfty-King CT-1 and CT-2 waterers for both horses and cattle.

Thanks, I like the design. Interesting to see if it's as freeze proof further up north. We've got about a 40" frost line out in the open. I've gotten more and more nervous about tossing something into a horse trough and then plugging it in. I wouldn't put that heater in the bathtub with me even if I wired it myself all the way back to the panel. Why do it to the animals.

Our frost line is only about half that, but we do get some spells where it will be near or below zero for a few days. The only thing to watch when it is that cold is that the float balls don't freeze to the top. If so you just have to go pop them loose to let the animals drink. If you have enough animals drinking from the unit it is less likely to happen. Also you have to be sure to bury the insulated earth tube deep enough to provide warm air into the unit. I set them to about 4' deep around here, in your area I'd go 5-6' deep.
