Hey Bird - - has the thermometer hit 100 yet? I was floored when you mentioned earlier in the summer that a Dallas TV weatherman said it might not get that hot this year.

Tdog, I believe the TV weatherman said the other day that Dallas has officially only had one day when it reached 100 this year. However, my thermometer out here in the country hasn't quite gotten there yet. I've seen 99 once. This might go on record as the coolest summer yet. And we had a pretty severe grasshopper plague this year, but they didn't stay around as long as they did the last two years. I don't know what happened to them or where they went. It's been an unusual year for sure. Now if it would just rain . . ..

Well Bird, congrats on the cooler August than normal. Sorry to hear it is dry again - - last time you mentioned the wierd summer weather you were getting a few showers.

Here in SE La. we finally began to get some rain. Only an inch less that normal during July & I've received over 14 inches already in August. Stange indeed, but no complaints.

Wow, I don't recall us ever getting that much rain in any one month. 8.45" in October '98 was the wettest single month we've had in the last 8 years. And last month was the wettest July (3.46") since '95. We had a total of about a quarter inch on August 9 and 10 this year and that's all we've had since July 17. And the newspaper this morning says we may hit the 100 mark this weekend.

I've heard that too much rain makes the watermelons not very sweet, and that's all the have left in the garden. They're very very small, but sure are good and sweet./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif And it looks like we may have the best pecan crop we've had in several years.

14+ inches in August is unusual. It usually is around 5-6 in. The bulk of the rain was from the night of the 5th - - when I checked my 5.5 in. gauge the next morning, it was overflowing, so I really don't know how much we had. I didn't sleep a lot with all the lightning & thunder. Then it rained another .5 in. later in the day. I'm still not complaining after our last three very dry years. But I wish we could share some of it with those folks who really need it - - those along the eastern seaboard or those out west.
