What is the difference between single and double flighting on an auger bit.

If I'm not mistaken, single flight has one "screw" to remove dirt from hole, double flight has two. I think the advantage is the double flight removes the dirt better.

I think single flighting means one piece of metal, helix wraped around the shaft to remove the spoils. And double flight is 2 pieces of steel on opposite sides to remove spoils (most drill bits are double flight).

Single flight would have one cutting edge at the bottom extending from the shaft, double flight would have 2 cutting edges 180 degrees apart both extending from the shaft.

I hope that is clear enough, because I cannot think of another way to describe it.

Thanks guys, I'll go check out my new auger tonight to make sure the dealer gave me the right one. I knew from the Bush Hog brochure that double flighting was better but I did not know exactly what it was.

Spencer,
The double filghting works real good in sandy soil to move the soil from the hole but may not work as good as single flight in clay type soil.
