The auction was in Sharon Springs, NY. I was there with John. Some of the prices were good, but every time I wanted something it went high! Except for a John Deere backblade, which I thought I had for $150, and then the auctioner claimed I bid $200 (I didn't). I was so po'ed that I wouldn't take it, but looking back I should have. John almost hit me when I let that go, but I don't like it when it seems that they're jacking up the price. I could have been wrong, but you only have a second to react, and it took me more than that to calm down.

I missed this one, but do attend about every other one. Jim McFadden's as honest as the day is long. I've seen some very good deals. I picked up a 7" Leinbach rake for $150 at his summer auction, he used it once, level the road thru the auction site.

Jim has at least 3 auction/yr, spring/summer and fall.

So where do you find out about these auctions? Can anyone go to them?

I think it was just the confusion of a fast bid, but at the moment I thought I was being set up, but looking back I probably wasn't and missed a good deal. I've been going to auctions for years, and sometimes it can get confusing when everyone is shouting at once, and the auctioner is trying to go as quickly as he can. It was my fault, and I'm paying the price by being bladeless now!

John, according to the inlaws, you have to be beyond the Albany area to call it upstate. They're in Chazy (near Plattsburgh). Personally, unless it's summertime (Jul and Aug) it's all too far north. Does sound like we missed out on some reasonable deals though.

Nah... I thought if you live at least 1 mile north of NYC area... it was considered Upstate... /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

RichZ is originally from Long Island... he should know... /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

John, and when you go 20 miles west beyond Sharon Springs it changes to central NY.

Hi Art,

I was just looking at your Whites Farm Supply Website

You certainly carry some top shelf rotary cutter lines… Bush Hog, Woods, Rhino, and Schulte… {where’s Brown?/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif}.

I also noticed multiple tractor lines as Case/IH, New Holland, Kubota and Cub Cadet…

Exactly how far are you from Sharon Springs? And do you have any spring or fall auctions?

I’d like to take a trip over to “Central NY” and see one of your places… /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Yep, people in NYC and Long Island call anything beyond The Bronx upstate, even Westchester! I always felt it was the Capital District and north. I live in Washington County, so I think I qualify to anyone! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Jim doesn't do much advertising, I've only seen these auctions in the weekly shopper. Jim may do some direct mailing. Next auction, I'll post the ad.

Good morning John, most all is correct but we don't sell the New Holland tractors, but we do sell Brown it just doesn't get sold enough here. We have had auctions in the past but the last couple of years we have sent machinery to some of the auctions in and around us. The auctions are good for bringing people in but we often loose several days of shop work which we never seem to have done. Our Sangerfield store is located about 40 miles further west from Sharon Springs at the intersection of 12 & 20. I joke when people ask about it but I think we have an action everyday!

Art,

That just goes to show ya... now you need an auction once in a while to make money... /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Advertise in the downstate papers and you'll have people fighting over "who's going to pay more than retail prices..." /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I normally go out to Richfield Springs{Jordanville} @ the Russian monastery with my family... so I'm assuming you are just down the road a ways from there...

John I'm headed for Jordanville directly. We are about 25 miles from there. As far as where we do sell John we have a good following from ag farmers in VT,Conn,NH and Mass with a customer on Nantucket. We do like to know our customers and prefer the personal touch. With our eqipment auctions it is mainly ag equipment that gets sold and we have had a good draw of customers from it but there is down time to the organization and with three stores inventory to move to one site it costs us more than to take it to specific auctions and wark away. We have had people not take what they bought, not pay for what they bought, and of coarse return it several days later saying isn't what they thought they were buying. That has left a bad taste of us having an auction again. I do know what you mean about buying for more than retail as I still get to see that when I get to auctions.
