arg what do all the numbers mean!

So as my hobby farm grows, i find myself wanting to add a small AG tractor. 50ish hp.

many other brands have a series name (new holland, TN series vs the CUT TC series, well they used to at least)

seems JD just numbers there tractors. some 3 digit some 4 digit. and there seems to be NO good way to determine were they draw the line between a small AG tractor and and a large CUT and various frame sizes in AG tractors.

is there a sticky (i wish) or other thread were you JD fans have got a short tutorial of model year number corresponding to what "type" of tractor it is.

Oh my search is limited to Year 2000 +- 5 years (95 -05)

to put things in perspective
this 97 40hp JD5200 is 4700lbs (so says seller)
1997 JOHN DEERE 5200 40 HP to 99 HP For Sale At TractorHouse.com
but this 02 52hp kubota MX5000 is 3500lbs

Is there a rule of thumb for tire size vs frame size of the machine. 28 rear 20 front vs 30r 24ft? 28r 24f ?

whats the diff between a 5200 and a 5210? (the xx10 is an entirely diffrent engine? an addtional 13hp?)

(something tells me there is a SIGNIFICANT frame size difference there but yet they are both 5 thousand series tractors? and the 5310 has more HP?)

perhaps you can see how a non-JD guy gets VERY confused very quickly when he starts looking for a 50ish hp small AG machine and all the green tractors in this category.

Problem is with those advertisers. The 5200/5300/5400/5210/5310/5410 are all the same frame size tractor. The 5310 factory advertised weight with MFWD and no implements is 4960 pounds. The 5400 is 5070 pounds. The TEN series is a later model with higher horsepower. Don't mix PTO with engine horsepower. The 5200 is 40 PTO HP, and the 5210 is 45 PTO HP. They both have the same 179 CID engine.

The xx10 is a later model series that replaced the xx00. I do not know what changes were made to increase power from 5200 to 5210. It is not unusual for JD to use the same size engine with changes for different power levels, just like in cars.

5x00 produced from about 1992 to 1997.
5x10 produced from about 1998 to 2001.

The 5x10 engines were a redesign to meet the new emissions requirements. All manufacturers had to do this, and many ended up with more horsepower.
