So I'm walking past the reduced isle at my local Lowe's and I spot a JD walk behind mower (Model JS-40) with the nifty looking zero turn front wheels. I look at the price and it says 50 bucks and I can see where it was reduced from 100 bucks! This thing lists for $499.00! Wow! Can this be right? This thing looks like it was used twice! So I get the salesman and he says, "Oh, that's the one with the bent crank." I can see that a million people have gone up to him about this mower and gotten the same response. I'm not dissuaded, how much can a Briggs crank cost? Can't be much. So I ask to look at it more closely and his interest peaks. I must be the first guy to actually examine this thing after the "bent crank" remark.

It turns over and isn't grabbing or binding and has compression but the blade is missing. He says I'llgive it to you for the 50 bucks minus the blade cost. Wow, 33 bucks for this neat mower. I buy it.

Now I need another walk behind mower like I need a root canal on a good tooth and Nancy is looking at me like my next stop is for medication but this is just to good to let go so I pack it in back of the Subbie and head home all excited.

I get home and rip it apart. OK this mower has a Briggs engine on it but I'm thinking it's over head valves and Deere probably has them do all kinds of neat stuff to make this engine a Deere. Wrong. This is the same engine you get on a Wally World run of the mill mower. No cast iron sleeve, no valve guides, no ball bearings like the Hondas. El Crapo. The blade housing is thin, real thin and the wheels are flimsy plastic. Now I'm thinking where do they get the gumption to sell this thing for 500 bucks?

I'll fix it for the 51 bucks the crank costs and by the time it's done it will cost me a 100 bucks or so but Deere should be ashamed of themselves for putting their name on this flimsy piece of junk. It better cut like a dream or it will be on the front pasture with a sign on it "Buy Kubota".

So, do you think the salesman actually knew what he was talking about? Was the crank really bent?

Here's the thing. Before I pull it apart I put a dial gauge on the blade shaft and it's about 40 to 50 ths. out.
I was going to beat it into submission and live with it but I figured it was to good a machine to be so cavalier about.( Little did I know) When I took it apart I spun the crank on my lathe and found that it had twisted (like a rubber band wound up) slightly AND the shaft was also bent after the bottom main. so straightening it was out because it would only weaken it further.

The guy who owned this thing must have really nailed something because even the flywheel pin had sheared.

The problem is in the design. It's to long a run from the bottom of the shaft to the blade. You have to be careful with this machine or you'll bend cranks.

Wait 'till you hear this part. I go to pull the flywheel off and there is writing on it saying to use the the stud holes to remove the flywheel. Guess what? The two flywheel holes weren't even tapped. I had to drill them out further and tap them to fit 5/16-18 bolts.

Just as bad, the pull cord housing was pop riveted on! To change the cord you have to either buy a housing or drill out the rivets.

Are these people kidding? 500 bucks!

Similar to the original Deere compacts that they had Yanmar build for them They actually despeced the Yanmars. It took Deere a few years before they made compacts on par with Kubota and Ford.

Maybe then but not now, my 2320 is a hard machine to beat. That's what fooled me about this mower. My 62D commercial deck is 10 or 11 gage, smooth as silk and there is no stopping it.
I got into a 45 degree ditch with the tractor and just put it in 4WD and backed out. I didn't even have to use the diff. lock.

The snow blower is a beast too. I've done 4 foot drifts with ease. No chains and plowed uphill.

I'm as happy as clam with the 2320. (Why do we say that? Does anyone on the planet actually know how happy clams are?)

How about I'm as happy as guy whose mother-in-law promised never to show up again.

Yea, that works for me, the old battle axe is as dry as a popcorn fart.

Clams must be happy. They're always smiling. BTW, I hope your MIL doesn't look at this site.

Have you taken a look at the JD tractors and mowers sold by the big box stores? They are building to the level of their competition. I can't believe that they get 500 bucks for that stuff.

I bent the crank once on a nearly new Bowens mower. Had it fixed and then bent it again. Junked it at that point. Figured it was a bad design. Don't know who made the engine for it. I'll never buy a Bowens again.

See my 14SB (1994 JD walk behind) experiences with its Kawasaki engine in the Lawn & Garden section below. I finally took it to a mower repair place that was recommended by a long time mechanic in the area. Waiting to see what they have found to do to it. I was about realy to jerk the head off to give it a valve job.

Reminds me of an incident about 3 years ago. I have an old (about 10 years) K-Mart 22" self propelled walk-behind. We hadn't sold the old house yet, so I had to load the mower up & cut the lawn once a week. One day I hit an old stump & bent the crank (broke the stump too). After mumbling a few choice words, I loaded the mower back up (couldn't finish, it vibrated too much) & hauled it home. After pulling the blade, the end of the crank was out about .1" according to the dial indicator. Having nothing to lose, I broke out my favorite precision calibrator (3lb hand maul :D ) & beat the shaft straight. Although this mower only gets used once or twice a year, it's as smooth as ever & the lower crank seal doesn't leak. Guess I have a soft spot for those B&S engines...
