Are there more stringent operating and maintenance requirements to maintain a Tier 4 engine running correctly compared to Tier 2? I only use my 5065e 50-55 hours per year. It was made in October 2012 and is Tier 2. I have had a technician tell me for Owners that don't run them enough or properly for emissions reasons they have more problems. I don't know what the issues are but something to do with exhaust.

Thank the over-zealous EPA for those problems.

Some have had issues with the regen and some have not. I have 100 trouble free hours on a Tier 4 New Holland Workmaster 50 that uses a catalytic converter to meet emissions. I can't comment on long term reliability but trust that the system is well engineered and will give many trouble free years.

Let's hope they are all well engineered. However, well engineered or not, they will be more problematic than pre Tier 4 engines because of their complexity.

Tier 4 engines must be run at higher RPMs to keep the filters from plugging. That and the regen. cycle causes the tractors to burn more fuel. Tier 4 engines may produce less pollution per gallon of fuel used, but they use more gallons of fuel. Add to that, more pollution is produced while pumping and refining the crude oil to produce and transport more diesel fuel, etc. So where's the emission savings and cleaner air? EPA and government bureaucrats...........

No regen on cat systems. The emissions system has a 10 year warranty. FPT developed direct injection and sold the technology to Bosch. I am a FPT fan and trust their engineering. Agreed that increased complexity can lead to reliability issues. If the Workmaster proves unreliable I'll just run the SU.

They are pretty reliable as long has you don't stop and start it a few times after the regen light comes on.

Contractor was running a new Cat d6 for a bridge replacement job on my road. The thing was so quiet I was wondering if it was electric, and there was NO sign of any smoke. Amazing to say the least. There was a older d6 that was smoking and noisy...what a difference. I know which one I would choose to run all day!

I have noted less problems cited by owners of final, Tier IV engines than the interim Tier IV engines. Differences are that the FinalTierIV utilizes a system of catalysts and a shorter regen burn cycle.

This has made the engines cleaner with fewer problems with overheating and fouled turbos, etc.

One consistent recommendation from manufacturers with both the Interim and Final Tier IV engines - don't idle the engine for extended periods of time.

The issues I have seen are from people who idle a lot or start the tractor, never let it warm up and then shut it off and never really work the tractor. Idle and just the short little couple minute runs seem to be what causes issues. I don't think you will have issues not putting on many hours as long as you use the tractor when you do run it.
