Aquiline Talon Chains on 2WD Tractor

Anybody here run the Talon studded tire chains on a 2wd tractor? They look impressive, the Duo Grip chains I've got have voids that are way to wide and I'm struggling to get any traction. The Duo Grips are also falling between the lugs on my R4 tires. I think the Talons will take right care of it but I was wondering if anybody had already been there and done that.


I'm planning to put them on an International 2544 tractor, I have loaded 14.9 X 24 tires and a large concrete block on the back....it's about a 3' cube, I don't know what it weighs but it's alot.:laughing:

That is basically what the dealer was telling me but I didn't want to go off their word....not that anyone would ever exaggerate the truth just to sell something. Hearing about your experience I think they will be worth it for me. I use this machine primarily to move snow banks to different areas as my driveway closes up.

These give me so much traction I had to relearn using the loader. To much forward tilt on the bucket will peel snow, frozen gravel, and frozen sod like butter. All at the same time. I don't think you can spin a tire with these things on.

If you just use 2WD, it's time to learn to use those steering brakes.

Got the chains put on my old International today, they offer a noticeable improvement in traction. It's still not 4wd but it's very usable as is.:thumbsup: It would have been nice if I could have run a rope through my rim so that I could drive the chains on, since they do not I had to go old school and lay my chains out to drive onto them...problem with that is trying to get them tensioned the first time is almost impossible with the slack chain down bottom. I guess that's a nice advantage of a smaller tractor that you can jack up off the ground, unfortunately this one isn't it.:laughing:

You can also loop a rope through the side chains at one end, then hook it over the tire lugs and drive ahead. As you go it pulls the chain up over the back of the tire. It's the way I put mine on, no need for a hole through the rim. I do recommend doing it in two or three stages though, stopping and shaking the chain down into place at each stop. Those Aquilines are made by Tellefsdal, they have a website that has instructions on installation and tensioning.

My 3400 is better with them than without when in 2wd, but still not great. If it was heavier it would make more difference. In 4wd it's really good in my opinion. I only use them on the rears.

Are your tires loaded, Sean? With those type of chains, the tractor should climb trees in 2wd.

I have to agree. Using these chains just on the back tires in snow makes the tractor pretty much unstoppable. It almost the same as having steel tracks. I have engaged 4WD just to see if it helped the steering as Roy Jackson mentioned. I can't see where 4WD helps the steering that much. It's a different level of snow pushing with a FEL with these chains on. If the FEL is in float it will push so much weight the FEL will "buckle" and raise the front tires off the ground. If the FEL is in the locked position the FEL will ride up in big drifts and, again, raise the front tires off the ground. You are just not going to spin these chains. Not pushing snow.

I beg to differ.:laughing: My tires are loaded and I have a large cement weight on the back and I spin them backing up a slight incline. They'll dig their way out of a bind but spinning them isn't uncommon so far.


Here's a pic of the back of my International with the cement weight, this was with the old chains but it will give you an idea of the size of the weight...the tractor has 75% filled 14.9X24 tires on the rear
