I have only purchased off road diesel once in my life. The price listed on the pump did not have any road taxes included. When I went inside to pay the price included road taxes. I asked the clerk and they said I would have to send in paperwork to get a refund from government. I am not sure what the point of dyed off road diesel is if I still have to pay taxes at the station. I can apply for a tax refund on regular on road diesel, but I wanted to buy off road diesel to get the money back up front.

Has anyone else purchased off road diesel in Minnesota and still had to pay the road taxes at the station?

Sounds like the clerk was wrong to me. Here in VA you can buy offroad diesel and pay no tax, or buy road diesel and send in paperwork to get a tax credit.

I would contact the state and find out if the station is double dipping by charging tax on non-tax fuel.
Here there are two pumps one is highway one is non-highway. No paper work or filing.

That's the way it is here across the border from the OP in Wisconsin.

The station has a separate pump for off road diesel and it is dyed red. It is an old pump that can't do pay at the pump. The pump said one price with out tax and the clerk charged me a higher price with tax. I was only buying a gallon or two that time, but I now have a diesel commercial mower and I could save a bit every year by using off road diesel.

Same in Michigan, at least where I buy it.

I would contact the state. You cannot post one price and charge another. They are most likely pocketing the difference.

I heat with fuel oil, which in my area is (red dye) #2 ULSD. Minimum delivery is 150 gallons so when they fill my HHO tank I get extra fuel in another container for the tractor.
Have you tried another source such as a HHO company rather than at the station.

I no longer live near that station so I'm not going to bother reporting them to the state since I would need to buy fuel to confirm if they are still charging tax. It sounds like I shouldn't be charged tax on off road fuel, which is what I thought. I don't know if if there is a station near me now selling off road diesel. It probably would not be worth the refund paperwork to claim about $10 worth of tax on the diesel my mower uses.

The station I was buying off road fuel from is a fuel oil and lubricants distributor that also has a gas station at their main site. The front of the gas station is modern with pay at the pump, but around back they have about eight older pumps dispensing diesel. Some pumps have high flow nozzles for big trucks and some have smaller nozzles for diesel cars and pickups. They have one pump for off road diesel there.

No tax in Colorado or NM with either pay at the pump or inside on the non-road fuel.

However be careful around here getting the red die stuff in your truck. I used my 5 gallon can for both and sometimes I fill my truck from one when I bought road diesel after buying red dye. (I carry 10 spare gallons when on vacation just in case) When getting my unit service I got asked the question by the dealer if I was running red dye fuel in my ruck (they had a real serious look on their face). I explained the situation on the mix use on the cans and they let it go. Told me to get new cans for the truck fuel. It appear that they are required to report any illegal use here in Colorado and New Mexico and both States are strict about it. Big brother is watching me
