I found a local distributor that sells Warren tractor transmission oil for $38 a five gallon pail. The container states it meets all the requirments of a long list of manufactures.
Just wondering if anyone has used this stuff before, the web site has less info than the container does. The web site seems to tout the great profit margines their prouduct has rather than get into details of the product specs which makes me wonder on the quality of the product.

I think warren makes some of walmarts oil.. though I'm not sure about their utf. Last I checked walmart utf was about 30$ per 5g.. that's waht I use... As long as the oil meets your specs.. you should be ok..

Warren makes a good grade oil. Not premium, and not garbage, IMHO it seesm like a good middle of the road grade.

I respectfully disagree. Minimum specs are just that, minimum specs. I consider anything above minimum to be insurance, not waste. I'm sure you have bought many things that exceed the bare minimum spec because you knew better. Oil is one of those things you can't see work, so people tend to take it for granted. But, differing opinions is what makes the world go round. And, Chris, you have had very good luck doing it your way so it is very difficult to argue with your method. IMHO, I'll stick with good oil.

I think we are being arbitrary saying that the warren oil only meets the bare minimum specs.. but even so.. if it meets the specs.. where's the issue... the manufacturer wrote the specs that need to be met for satisfactory operation.

I'd also wager that any of the commercially available oils being made today are of better quality that of ones made 30+ years ago... etc..

Meet the specs, and follow the maintenance schedule.

Exceeding the specs I would assume would give you a margin perhaps on the maintenance schedule.. or in severe use situations.

Looking at price vs quality... so if you have oil A that is 35$ and oil B that is 70$.. Lets say that oil A has adds they waer out / get used up faster since it is an economy oil.

With that.. i can replace oil A 2x as often .. or, if you are running up against an hours use issue.. IE.. 300hr change.. or a 600 hr change.. it's quite possible you are changing both oils before their life is used up, depending on the application... If You are changing per hour based on maint, and Oil A only has 50% usefull life left and oil b had 80% oil life left.. and they both get changed.. looks like oil B just costs more without doing much else except making oil B's owner a lil bit richer.

A UOA could also be done.. etc.

Yea, it's funny, oils are one of those mystery things that you can't see worn out. But, to answer the question and I'm sure we all agree, is that Warren oil is more than adequate.

So the guys who sponsor race cars and advertise heavily meet what additional specifications and by how much? Exactly what does that additional $1/quart buy other than some fancy verbage and graphics on the bottle? Sure I'll pay a little extra for full synthetic but names do not mean much to me.

I've seen the oil monger at the trade show with a bar against a rotating mandrel that does so much better with his $uper oil. I walked away as soon as I noticed how he manipulated the device differently with the 2 samples. (I wasn't wearing my boots)

Edit: Here is the guide to what counts on the label.

I was in my NH dealer today and got all the filters for my TC33D tractor. We got to talking about their Ambra hydraulic oil which for my tractor costs 194 dollars since I already have a 2.5 gallon jug that has never been opened. Versus Shell's universal hydraulic fluid, sssshhhh at Wal Mart.
One of the mechanics said if I didn't have this uniform on.... The foreman said, "I don't need to take mine off, I would buy the Shell."
People have opinions and it seems like this is the most controversial part of this forum, but on the whole it does give a good mix of ideas. I would have to agree with Soundguy on the whole. If a lubricant meets the specs, or exceeds the specs the manufacturer sets, then use a good filter and change as per manufacturers recommendations. :D
