Its been a long winter here with not much snow. Its too muddy to take the tractor out when the ground is not frozen so when it got up to 50 degrees I started up the tractor, just to hear it run. I cant wait till spring when I can put it to work again.

I think a lot of us that enjoy our equipment do start them to hear it run now and then I'm looking forward to buying a home and using my equipment to take care of all our projects. I have a passion for this stuff

Oh yea you bet! But really I run it because it's good to run them once in a while, right!

I agree, warming the engine will 'boil out' any water vapors or condensation that gets into the engine and or its various components.
Driving it a bit will coat the innards of the transmission, differential(s) final drives etc thus preventing corrosion.

However to be beneficial you need to get the temps up and run long enough to recharge the battery.

I start Kabota L2800 up at least once a week to keep battery charged! Love the sound too!

You betcha I do. If the ground is frozen I'll take it for a spin and maybe do some brush clearing. If the ground is soft/muddy, I only back it out of the shed and let it run for a while. Makes me yearn for Spring!

Today, we had a relatively warm day. I replaced several burnt-out light bulbs in the garage and swapped out a 4 ft florescent work light over the workbench. The tractor was only somewhat in the way of these operations. I could have worked around it, but I started it up and let it warm up for a bit outside. I shut the tractor off after a while. Before I brought it back in I poured in 5 gallons of diesel and a couple ounces of Power Service.

My tractor does have a winter job. I clear the snow from my 300 ft driveway and parking area with it. The tractor stays inside, in an unheated garage. When it's really cold, I plug in the engine heater for a while (at least an hour - sometimes overnight) before starting. I also use the glow plugs when it's below 40. The only time it didn't start right up immediately was when its 12 year old original battery finally gave out. I put in a replacement battery from an auto store. That one probably will only last half as long, but cost about 1/3 the price of a new battery from JD.

Today, I also did the first whole-house test run on my new Generac 15000E portable generator. That's one sweet-sounding 30 HP twin!

Yeah, I like engines, and I like to hear them run!:)

Yep, I start mine to hear them run and get the fluids moving around. I started the Case the other day just to see how it would start with the 6 volt system with the temp at -32 degree celsius. It is stored in a unheated garage. Fired right up.

No, I would rather let a tractor sit than start it up for short periods of time. Particularly when it is cold. Starting them and running for extended periods of time where the engine gets hot under load is what the engines are made for.

Oh that's no good and no fun what so ever!
