Has anyone seen a PTO driven Air compressor? The only one I can find is on the internet and it seems to be an obsolete Northstar product no longer sold by Northern Tool. I thought it would be nice to use for field tire inflation and perhaps spray painting fences and especially for blowing out the radiator, which I need to do a lot b/c of pollen and dust here in North Carolina.
Thanks

No I have not seen one, but thought that I might build one someday. btw some Zetor tractors have built in air compressors, or at least used to have them.

Years back farmers would take out a spark plug and screw in a
gizmo with a air hose attached... One of my neighbors had one,
other then the tractor sounding funny running on three cylinder, it
worked good as a air compressor. Don't know what effect the
small amount of gas had on rubber tires an tubes, but it worked.

I did seen the gizmo advertised in a Central Tractor catalog a few year
back but C.T. has since gone out of business...

I purchased one of the Northern Tool units for my father as a xmas gift around 10 years ago. It came with a tire chuck and a blow gun nozzle, and worked quite well actually. We were once able to re-seat a 15" tire on a homemade trailer after it rolled off the bead using the thing. It put out quite a large volume of air when spinning at the full 540 RPM.

As I recall it had strange looking fittings on the air-hose, though. If you wanted to use any air tools other than those that came with it, you'd have to change it over to the standard quick-connects.

I think CT is pretty much now Valu-built.
That is where our local dealer that used to be CT seems to get his stuff from.

The cumbustion gasses do not pass into the tire.. the spark plug adapter unit uses the engines compression to run its own valvine, darwing in fresh air for the tires.

Lots of trucks have engine driven air compressors, like for air brakes.. etc.

Also some vehicles use a smog pump design. Shouldn't be hard to fabricate/modify a set of brackets.. like alternator brackets to add an aux engine air pump.. or even use a front stinger driveshaft mount to cobble up an air pump. Just come up with a small storage tank, and 'blow-off' valving.

You could also find a small electric air compressor.. like a small 120v unit that has a bad motor.. remove the motor and mount the unit to a 3pt frame.. and find a way to attatch a pto shaft to whatever drive mechanism that the motor would have driven.

I have one that was made by Deere. It works very well for field use. I don't think Deere has had them for a long time. Mine is likely 40-50 years old.

Here's the gauge from an EnginAir compressor, the gizmo that screwed into a spark plug hole.

Here's a small PTO air compressor: http://www.bare-co.com/files/general/g66.htm

Or you can make one. It's been a good many years back but I remember several folks around here that used straight 6 and V8 engines and turned them with the tractor PTO. I think what they did was remove the lifters, push rods and rocker arms from all the exhaust vales. Then install a check valve in each spark plug hole and connect all the lines from the check valves together and run them to a tank. If I remember right the V8 produced enough air that it didn't need a tank. Now it's been a long while back since I saw one but I think they used a belt system to get it turning in the right direction and used a PTO shaft connected to the jack shaft of the belt sheaves. I know one still had the water pump and radiator working too. Don't know if you'd need that but I expect there will be some heat build up. Still have to use engine oil and filter and it has oil pressure on the system also.

Like I said it's been years since I saw one. Some others here may have more to add on that too. It may also be a bit more than you want to build also. But they will pump air.
