My recently purchased (used, 200hrs) BX2230 has just developed a loud screeching when the brakes are applied hard while the tractor is moving. I normally use the HST for braking effect when moving, but occasionally use the brakes briefly instead. Anyway I assume a previous owner may have run quite a while with the parking brake on and worn the friction discs down to bare metal. Like the BX2200 this tractor uses multi disc brakes on each rear axle, so I guess I am looking at pulling the transaxle out of the tractor and tearing down. My question is, has anyone done this and how big a job was it? Does the entire transmission need to be disassembled (all side covers, HST pump, mid and rear PTO shafts, etc.) or can it be done just through the right side cover? I have downloaded a BX2200 service manual and have the 2230 manual on order but they cover complete teardown only, not just what might be needed for only doing the brakes. I'd appreciate any tips from anyone who has had to go into their transmission for any reason.
