Hope I get lucky and one of the members here has one. I am trying to replace the gearbox on my new idea snow blower, and it is no longer available but I have a strong suspicion that the ih-70 and 80 gearbox is the same thing and that does appear to be available. Hoping someone can get me a few measurements on theirs so I can confirm it's the same. Thanks!

Any chance it is a Comer T-27? I think 6 inches high, 5 inch square bolt pattern top and bottom, 1 1/2 or 40mm fan shaft depending on age, 1 3/8-6 spline input, 1 1/4-19? side shaft. I am not sure on a few of those measuerments and do not have a International or New Idea blower but almost all the blowers in that size range use a gear box with those dimensions.

Thanks! Sounds close. After doing a bunch of digging it looks like Mckee actually made the snow blower and they sold them to new idea and also John Deere. I don't know about a coma t27 but certainly could be another rebranded one. The internationals are different as far as I know except while doing research I came across someone asking about gearbox parts for the 70 and 80 and they said it was stamped Hayes Dana 40 on the gearbox and mine has the exact same thing cast into it. I understand it could be the same housing with different shaft configurations of course. Mine is like 6 and 1/8 wide, inch and a half keyed through shaft inch and 3/8 spline shaft out to run the auger. I'll have to run out and check the bolt pattern distance. The international part is the only one that seems to be available that I can find.

yeah mine is a 5" square bolt pattern, auger shaft is 19 spline, measures about 1.230 inches over the splines. thru shaft is 1.5" keyed

There seems to be some confusion on the size of the cross shaft at the brearings, although if replacing the whole gearbox this shouldnt matter as long as the splined part is the same. There seems to have been two versions, one with a 1.375" dia cross shaft and one with a 1.5" shaft, and bearings to match of course. I actually have the manual to my new idea and it describes the cross shaft as 1.375" cross when it is actually 1.5" On the parts diagrams for the IH 70 and 80 they give to different parts diagrams for the gearbox, one for each size cross shaft, however they show the same paert number for the "different" shafts, so something got mixed up I think. They also list the same part number for both gearboxes despite the different shaft sizes.

I'm still using the International 70 blower my late father bought new back in the mid-seventies and I could take some measurements for you. I guess you really need a blower down where you are this year!

The early gear boxes used the smaller shaft. I had an early 70 and I did the bearings in the gearbox and found that out.

Yes it is a Dana-Hayes gearbox.

Oh yeah that would be great! I know its kinda hard to see in there with the gearbox mounted and all, but here is a picture. The first line in post #4 gives the shaft and bolt pattern dimensions, and its about 6 1/8 wide, where it bolts into the frame. I really appreciate it.

messicks is showing the cross shaft still available. Not sure which one it is as they show the same part number for both the before and after serial numbers. Entire gearbox is $870.

My IH 70 blower has 003840 as a serial number which seems to make it an early one. The dimensions match the box you have: Auger shaft 1.23", through shaft 1.5", square 5" bolt pattern and 19 splines on the auger shaft. It was difficult to measure accurately the height of the auger shaft above the bottom of the box but it is roughly 3 1/8". The box also has the Hayes Dana 40 cast in.

Awesome, thanks so much! Best I can tell it's the same thing. I guess I'll go ahead and order one. The $870 sure hurts though.

What happened was I decided to have it sandblasted and painted. Turns out this place powder coated it gearbox and everything, cooked the seals of course. Great, now I have to rebuild the gearbox. Had such a hard time getting the impeller off the gearbox shaft ended up cracking the gearbox housing in the process.
