I was using the BX today for a long period of time, and one of the loader retaining pins sheared. It's not the actual pin that the loader pivots on, it's the pin which holds the pivot pin in position. The retaining pin which sheared is the one on the top pivot right in from of the loader control. See pic. Second post has pic of what the retaining pin should look like. I had greased the pins this morning for the tihrd time, first time was at delivery, second at 10 hours, third now. I'm going to pick a new one up from the dealer on Monday, I'm just curious if this has happened to anyone else.

I have a bx 22 with 160 hours.... most of it with the loader.... no problems here...

It isn't uncommon. Nearly any time that these bolts break, it is because the person that installed it got over zealous tightening it.

There's no bolt involved and it doesn't get tightened.
The pivot pin slides into place and has a hole drilled in one end which a cotter pin is inserted through to keep it from turning.
I have not had this happen, but a little grease on those pivot pins when they are installed should keep them from binding. Some of them have fittings on them but not all, curiously.

Yeah, no bolt, just the shear pin. Ironically, it was greased the morning it broke. I really wasn't using the loader much today either, mostly the backhoe. Was digging out some stumps.

Well, most builder use a bolt. It is not a shear pin, it should have very little pressure on it. It is just there to hold the pin that does the work.

I'd say this is one point that really should have a grease fitting. Are you sure you didn't miss it? My 302FEL has a hole in the upright part of the frame that gives access to lube it from the rear. I would be amazed if there's no grease fitting for these pins. There's too much potential for wear, plus without lube the pin will rotate with the loader arm turning it into a fairly effective cotter pin cutter. Have another look for the grease zerk.

The only thing I can think of is that for some reason they missed cutting the access hole in the upright. In that case, look in from the top - between the pin and the upright and see if there's a zerk pointint towards the upright..........chim

Edit to add: I'm no engineer, but it looks like the intent is to keep the (big) pin from rotating so the movement takes place in the bushing of the loader arm, because there's a lot more surface area and it will not wear as quickly as it would if the movement took place between the (big) pin and the smaller bushings of the upright.

aardvark- just checked my FEL, which I removed yesterday, and sure enough- I have sheared the same cotter pin you did- and on the pivot pin with the external zerk that was just greased!!!
