Hi All, we are looking into a large machine building and horse barn combo and from the price quotes we are getting for a turn-key project, it would be a lot cheaper to buy a steel kit and erect it ourselves. Has anyone ever done put one up themselves? What kind of tools and equipment did you need? How long did it take? Did you need a lot of additional manpower? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Farming,

I am in the same boat as you. I was quoted $50k for a 50 x 60 with the insulation package. This was installed. I found the same building as a kit was around $14k. I believe I could put it up myself but I will need some help muscleing the support beams. Maybe I could just hire that part out and do the rest myself.

You might keep shopping around.

I'm getting a 30' x 40' X 12' tall, steel framed building on a 4" slab with a 16' x 10' overhead door, 36" entry door and 4'x3' window turn key for $13,360. (no insulation)

When I was pricing out the materials I couldn't get much under $11,000 comparing apples to apples.

The guy brings in a crew and the building is up in 2 to 3 days vs. if I was doing it on my own that would be closer to 2 to 3 months. I couldn't justify the $2,000 saved for the work it would take.

My 2 cents. Nathan

I put one of these: SteelMaster up last year with myself, a couple of hired hands, and a scissors lift that we rented for 3 weeks. Because of the location, the excavation and foundation cost about the same as the building. Still, in the same position again, I would do the same. I like the building a lot. Ours is 40 x 76.

I had a steel pole frame garage/shop built last June, 24'x42', 12" walls, two 10'x10' roll up doors, one window, one 36" man door. Price installed was $16,300. In kit form, cost about $11K. Spent about $7500 for a 6" concrete slab with #4 rebar criss-crossed on 24" centers.

Tools used were pretty basic: tall aluminum step ladders, pneumatic screw guns for the self-tapping metal screws, metal saws and a forklift to raise the roof trusses into position. Since I didn't have electric power installed when the garage was built, the contractor used his big Lincoln generator to run the air compressors and saws.

The sheet metal siding came in 3' width and 24' and 42' lengths.

I put up a 30'x40' Mueller Steel Building from a bolt together kit 6 yrs ago. Fully insulated, 2 10'x10' roll up doors, 1 walk thru door, 3 windows, 2' overhang all around, and gutters. The building price minus the slab was about $9500.
The only special equipment was a neighbor's large Farmall with a hay spike on the FEL that we used to lift the trusses in place. Then it was mainly cordless drills to put in LOTS of self tapping screws, circular saw with metal cutting blade, tall ladders, etc. Had help putting up the trusses and putting up the roof panels. Everything else I did by myself. Took about 6 wks, but that was only working weekends and maybe 3 evenings a week since that land is 30 miles from my house. Would have gone a lot faster with at least one helper.
Sounds like you are looking at something quite a bit larger. That may be more of a challenge.

I built this 40 X 60 six years ago, it is a US Steel brand with 8,000 bolts. Took about 6 weeks of very hard work and anybody I could con into helping for a few hours.

I have gotten a few quotes and they range from $65K to $80K for a 60x90x16... so when you generate an online quote from Steel Building with all the trimmings for $35,633.13 (minus the cost of the sliding doors) it looks like you could hire a bunch of buddies to help out and still come out ahead.

They sure do have good prices. I think I can probably set up the frame then hire a crew to install the roof and sides. Thanks for the link.
