This will be my next project. I would like to see some projects that could give me some ideas or input of what you guys would think how the ideal DH would be made . For example tandem or offset, blade size, pull or 3pt, weight and so on. Thanks in advance for the input!

Come across a gentleman that did some metal work for me that built his own from ground up. Believe it was a six footer and was heavy built. Would suggest finding one you like and use it for ideas.

I like building stuff if I have the time but be careful that the sum of the parts you need to buy aren't more costly than buying a ready made unit. I suspect that even if you had the steel components for the frame free that the cost would be a "wash". If you have to buy everything from scratch it may cost you considerable more to build it yourself. I would recommend you get together the material list and price it out before you commit to anything.

Thanks for the info guys! I did check into the cost of material and I came to the conclusion that I can probably build mine way stronger than the production models and more reliable for a decent discount from name brand. I bought a push blade that was name brand and had to replace the 3pt and brace it in the weak areas which cost me a little more than half what I paid for it because at the time I had to pay someone else to do the work. I built my own s-tine cultivator and had no problems from it for two years now and it cost $325 to build where the factory models were going for the $700 range. I also like the idea of having a one of a kind so if it's stolen it would be easier to locate also.

You are very right about keeping up with the cost though. Usually when I make mistakes is when the cost equals or passes a production piece. I did that with my trialer which the parts that I had left over will just go to the next project anyway.

Not from ground up, but I used parts from an old JD drag disk to make my offset.

Interesting, I'm taking apart an old disk assembly that was left on our property when we bought it in 1994.

I'm planning to use some of it to add weight in our ballast box, but I've been keeping the spacers and spindles with the thought of selling or trading them.

Thie original disk was cut into 3 pieces long before we got it, but the darn thing is still rock solid with only surface rust on it despite the 20+ year sitting out.

As far as pulling, about the same as the tandem. Most better quality disks will have scrapers.

Mine could stand new blades (I just used the best of what I had), but I really can't justify the cost for new ones no more than I use it! ~~ grnspot
