Trying to get the fan off. There is a hole next to the big bolt that is squared inside, is that a release like a PTO.

You mean a keyway?

I remember it was quite a task. Lots of heat and some way of hydraulically pulling on the fan was necessary. The retards that assemble these things would never even think of greasing them it seems!

The one I took apart [ 78" JRW rear blower, 26" fan ] was just held on by the bolt. The shaft that the PTO shaft is hooked to went straight thru the gearbox to the fan. It was key'd by a 1/4" square key. If yours is the same, you can take the bolt out. Squirt your favorite type of lub/rust dissolver into the bolt hole. You can then put the bolt back in several thread, or a big set screw of appropriate size, and us a puller to get it moving. Should not come off that hard. Be aware that you will find a few washers that are used as spacers to center the fan into the blower housing, and these [ or new ones ] have to be put in when you re-assemble the blower. I took the fan off without taking the auger off, but it helps to be able to easily rotate the auger to get it to slide in and out. Good luck....

JerryK describes the setup exactly, and with any luck it should pull off - that's the best case scenario. I unfortunately ran into the worst case and ended up having to destroy the hub that was seized onto the shaft. See posts 2 and 3 in this thread:

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. Oh, and as Industrial says, grease it when you put it back together.

Looks like you had fun...!!!! Did you keep track of any using of four letter words during the process...??? :)

I guess I was just lucky??? The first winter I had my brand new blower, I tried to blow a brick. Bent all but one of the four blades. Mine had a key - held in with a set screw. Used my industrial heat gun on the fan shaft and with minor persuasion it slipped off. Pounded the blades into shape - liberal amount of grease & anti-seize mixed and it was still easy to pull five years later when I, again, blew a large rock. At least it wasn't the same darn brick.

The four snowblower fans I have taken off in the last five years all came off fairly easy. On two the gear box seals were leaking enough it kept the shaft oiled and the the fans came right off after I removed the bolt in the end of the shaft. On one other the gearbox shaft was bent and the blower had been run that way for a while and there was no oil in the gearbox and the shaft was dry but the fan came off. The most difficult was a very hard used blower that someone else had welded the key into the shaft of the gearbox and the shaft was really very worn and a mess but with a bit of wiggling the fan came off.

I bought a used Puma and wanted to disassemble the fan to remove the gearbox to drain the oil as there was no drain plug. The fan did not come off easily and and a standard gear puller would not remove it. I had to borrow a friends handy hydraulic puller. It was on there tight. I cleaned it up well and used anti-seize when it went back together.
