We just hand an offer accepted on a 10 acre neglected mini farm. It currently has about 3.5 acres of overgrown pasture and about 5.5 acres of timber/pasture that’s been neglected for 10+ years.

I’ve always been an Orange tractor guy and have owned 3 Kubotas and 2 Kiotis over the years. Most recent tractor was a Kubota L6060 which I loved and miss dearly. But I’ve been in the Air Force for going on 21 years and an unexpected move to Germany forced us to sell all our equipment.

We’re starting over literally from scratch. I’ve researched all manufacturers and models and spec and price wise the TYM 5835R seems to be by far the best value for the money. It is substantially larger and with more capacity than the T574 I had originally thought I’d buy.

Was hoping that some of you may have experience on one that you would share?

I’d also like to hear from any of you that have backhoes on your larger frame tractors to see if they are worth it or not? Dealer said it would be around $7K more. It costs me $400/day to rent a mini ex plus the hassle of picking it up, dropping it off, etc.. I think it would be really handy to have around these next couple years to take down smaller trees (4-6”), put in some culvert and clean up creek beds, build some retaining walls, etc.. I had a backhoe on a JD 1025R and that thing was more of a toy than anything else I think. I just don’t want to spend $7K and get the same feeling. I have to imagine that these larger frame tractors would have a fairly capable hoe on them. What are your thoughts?

I have a T494 with the BY85 backhoe, which has the same specs as the BH350 for the 5835 (probably same backhoe). I have used it quite a bit to dig out red and white oak stumps, some ditches for drainage and some excavating for a retaining wall. It works well and while it's not strong enough to just rip a stump out of the ground, I found it pretty easy to dig around and under them enough to where it can pull them out. Takes a bit of getting used. But, most of my stumps are 2+ feet in diameter. A 4-6" stump it'd take out with very little effort.

But it all depends on what you'd use it for. It is in no way as good as a mini excavator. It's difficult to manage the spoils from the hole and having to move the entire tractor around might also require moving the spoils in order to be able to get it in the right spot.

I'm extremely happy with it as it has done everything I've needed it for and think it was well worth the purchase. It also acts as a nice ballast when moving 2000lb+ logs around.

I would recommend some shoes for the stabilizers as it will just pull the tractor around.

Here's one stump I dug out with it.

I'd probably look into renting an excavator. Regardless of brand, you can rent one many times before you reach the cost of a backhoe.

If you really think you'll need one that often, buy an excavator. It's easier to sell than a backhoe when/if you determine you didn't really need one.

Plus having two machines with hydraulics, give you the advantage of having equipment to lift and move things wh en. You need to work on the other machine

I also have the T494 and was recently looking at getting a backhoe for removing stumps. After researching this I decided on the Titan Extreme HD Stump Bucket Tree Scoop which is currently on sale for ~$1,375 plus free shipping. The TYM BY85 backhoe was ~$8K from a local dealer but I also found that Rural King sells them under the RK name for ~7K. RK also sells TYM filters for the T494 at at ~half the price from other sources. Their TYM built tractors under the RK name are probably also less expensive than a TYM dealer.

The stump bucket should work better and faster than a backhoe and take up much less space in storage.

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I thought I would add my thoughts. I wanted the 5835R, but they don't offer it with a cab, so I ended up getting a 574HC. I have the BY85 backhoe. It is useful enough for me. I live on a gravel road with lots of steep hills. Getting equipment in and out can be sketchy. When I took delivery of my tractor the guy driving the truck asked to unload it a half mile from my driveway and have me drive it the rest of the way. I opted to just buy the backhoe and have it live on my property. It's not as robust as a mini ex, but for me, it has been useful. I paid $7.5k from the dealer. You can do a lot with it, but it will take longer than a mini ex or commercial backhoe. I have dug a lot of red and white oak stumps. I dug my septic system and made swales, trenched for power lines. I use it for skidding logs out of the woods too. I plan on using it to help me cut a road down the side of a steep hill. It comes in handy for pushing over smaller trees. I have the mechanical thumb on mine. It's occasionally useful for grabbing rocks and stumps. I leave the BH on most of the time for ballast. The 574 can pick up way more than the ballast in the tires compensates for. It's not hard to remove and reattach. I can take it off faster than my box blade. Reattaching takes about 5 minutes. I just plug in the hydraulics and use the controls to line it up and then back into it. To get maximum flow to rear remotes, you must lower the 3 point all the way down and back the hydraulic lowering speed knob all the way out. Some people complain that the backhoe is weak, but they have the flow restricted. It's definitely strong enough pick up the rear wheels and drag the tractor around. I travel for work, and I'm at home about half the days of the year. That gives me a lot of time to do stuff with the BH. I'm not constrained very much in the time allotted to do jobs, so the backhoe made sense for me. I do wish there was a bigger aftermarket for buckets, rippers, ect. I welded an eye and some chain hooks to the bucket.

The 5835R is coming out as a cab 4058 model in early 2025 FYI. And I am thinking REALLY hard about possible upgrading to it one day.

Unfortunately its about a year too late for me. It's a shame too. I like everything about that model a whole lot more. The control setup, the metal fenders, two speed PTO. and POWER SHUTTLE! That is a slick machine. I wonder how it will compare in price to a 574HC.

It's a MUCH more capable machine than the 573, FEL lift capacity almost as much as the 754.
