Hi, I am getting ready to build a 28 x 28 Garage, it'll have board and Batten siding a Gambrel Style tin roof, I am going to have a 6 inch concrete floor with two foot high knee walls, the garage will have 10 Ft ceilings on the first floor and 8 ft on second floor.

I plan for now to have either one slider or two sliding barn type doors in the front and a regular door on the side toward the front of the building.

I plan to tyvec the outside of the building and then put up the board and batten, trusses will prob be 2ft oc.

The garage will be build into a bank a bit and that is the reason for the knee walls. There not be a beam in the center so the front will be one big opening, any idea how big I should make that?

I plan to have a Hay door up top with the over hang and pulley system like the old barns.

thanks

I built a 24X32 garage (shop); I was going to make it 24X30, and a builder friend of mine suggested make it in 8' increments, since that was standard size for such things as plywood, etc. I have a 16' overhead door in the front (East), and I love it. Can get 2 cars in, side by side, with no problem. I keep one car in there and have plenty of room for my wood working tools, benches, tool boxes, lumber storage and all my mowers. It has a standard 32" door in the other end, and a bay of 4 windows on the South. I also added a lean-to on the West side, which turned out to be very handy, and cheap storage space. It is insulated and the windows keep it about 15 to 20 degrees warmer in the winter than the outside temp.

I would go 28x40 and while the gambrel approach is OK it makes for more seams in the metal roof. Also you can get as much space if you do a 12/12 roof and no interior posts by usiing floor trusses.

Here's my 24-36 barn. should have made it bigger - there are two doors one on the front and one on the back side. Also dont put the man door on the "snow" side.

95% of the people who build a garage say they should have gone a little bigger. My concern is more the dimensions. It's very unusual to see a square building for several good reasons. I think it will be more useful space and more structurally stable to increase one of the dimensions. I've had garages with a single 16 foot door, and I think 18 feet is a better choice for getting two vehicles in easily. If I had a 28 foot wide building, I would look at other options like a 16 and a 9, or two 12's.

Depending on the exact execution, you get more usable floor space with a gambrel style roof. If you start each with a 5' wall, the 12/12 only gets you about 18' in 28' span, but a gambrel can get you upwards of almost 24'. On a 28' long building, that's another 168 sq. ft. This is based on stick framing each design - I have no idea how much space you get out of each if it is done with trusses - in that case, it might be a wash.

The gambrel roof is certainly more difficult to frame than a 12/12, but I find it more appealing as well. That decision, however, is just in the eye of the beholder.

I've attached a couple of pics, one showing the difference between and 12/12 and a gambrel, and one showing the small gambrel barn I build a few years back.

Good luck and take care.

I like the idea of two 12 FT doors, 28 X 28 is about all the room I have where I want to put it, If I was to go much bigger I would have to clear a lot of trees, and I can;t go deeper because of a Ledge.

I like the look of a gambrel Roof, I am trying to go for a old barn look.

My buddy owns a saw mill about a mile from me so Ill be getting all of my Framing lumber and Board and Batten from there.

Since you like gambrel check this out: Socket Systems, LLC. I used their fixtures to completely reroof our place essentially placing the roof structure to completely cover the existing house. Worked neat.

I got my truss calculations from this cool spec sheet from some university extension.

You decide on the bldg width you want, and it tells you the dimensions for each member. You will want to use a ridge beam to make a functional hay mow.

I purchased my Trusses pre made, I told them teh size of the building, I told them the size I wanted the Upstairs and the height I wanted the ceilings and the building plus the weight I planned for the second floor and they sent me a sheet that looks like yours and that was that. Building inspector wanted engineered Trusses, no more makeing your own unless you build them and have them approved by a Engineer.
