i just ordered a tuthill/fillrite fuel transfer pump to pump diesel fuel to my tractor.i got the regular duty yellow one.is there any tricks to putting this thing together that a rookie needs to know?like do i need to put some sort of sealant tape or something on the threads to keep it from leaking?or any other things that you vets of the diesel fuel transfer trade can help a rookie out with?
thanks,

I used Gasoila Soft-Set thread sealer to put my fittings together.

That pump comes with a three piece plastic pickup. I changed it to a one piece metal pickup because it seemed a bit flimsy, but it's probably not critical you do this. I just got some black metal pipe at the hardware store.

I also changed the nozzle to one that shuts off automatically. I used to stock nozzel at first but I like to auto shut off better. You can get a farm model for about $35 bucks. A "leaded" spout will give you a bit more flow. (A leaded spout refers to the size of the filler spout after the handle. This spout size will also not fit into a standard gas filler neck on a car, which helps prevent a stupid mistake).

I installed a Petro Clear filter after the pump. I think this is an important thing to add on.

The most common practice is to put the pickup a few inches off the bottom of the tank to avoid picking up water and junk that builds up down there. Then periodically drain the water and junk out via the bottom plug. (Maybe once every 6 months to a year?) Some people here think I'm nuts (and I'm okay with that!) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif but I put the pickup maybe 1/4" from the bottom so I pump out any crud and water before a lot builds up in there. This helps make sure the tank doesn't rust out from the inside (just like draining the tank from the bottom). My storage tank filter takes care of any water or crud that comes out. The filters on my equipment are always clean and never have water in them, which is more than I can say for the diesel I used to buy at gas stations.

steve, thanks for all the tips.my drum is made of plastic so will be difficult if not impossible to drain the water and sediment from the bottom of the tank.i ordered a goldenrod clear bowl fuel and water filter with it so we are eye to eye on that issue.
anybody else have any words of wisdom?
thanks,

I use a steel barrel and an 11$ rotary pump. The pump pickup sets on a standoff about 1/4" from the bottom. I would rather suck the water up with the fuel than let it accumulate since there is no low point drain. I used no thread sealant and all of the pipe fittings snugged up tight and leak free.

Barrel was free, pump was 11$, and I saved 51 cents a gallon on my last 25 gallon fillup by using off road diesel. Handy as heck.

When you say you saved 51 cents, how? No road tax?
