Is there anything I should be looking for specifically on a 1988 Case IH 885 4wd with loader? I'm thinking of going to look at one tomorrow and they have it listed at 11000.

https://www.tractorhouse.com/listings/farm-equipment/for-sale/31503309/1988-case-ih-885

I have been told that the splines for 4wd can be an issue and also the 4wd is electronic and activates when power stops being supplied (something along those lines). The guy that told me the issue with 4wd had it in hi gear going down the road and the 4wd lost power so it engaged while going down the road and caused the spline to break. When he looked into the issue and was looking for parts a service tech at a dealer told him about how the 4wd is powered. Now when he looked at it, it was previously welded (poorly) from a previous owner. He had bought it from a dealer and everything worked when he got it. He had also told me parts can be hard to get for this tractor. Anyone else out there with this tractor find it hard to get parts (other than filters, hoses etc)?

Never heard anything particular bad about them, chech a dealer for parts price and availability. This system for 4WD engagement is the std way used by all tractor manufacturers since the early eighties.

Looks in ok shape, the fenders on it appear to be ones off a later 95 series due to the light locations.

Repaint might be hiding some stuff. The lack of ROPS and bent stack screams barn scraper tractor to me.

Set up nice with the dual remotes and dual PTO shafts. I see it's missing the "horse shoe" that holds the drawbar centered.

It has the 8x8 shuttle...it it NOT a syncro shuttle, but a clutch pack shift with dry clutch, you still have to clutch, but no grinding when shifting F-R. Make sure it pulls smooth in both directions since forward uses one clutch pack and reverse the other.

I've never had issues getting parts for a similar 95 series, from dealer that doesn't sell Case IH anymore at that.

Let me know what your thoughts are on the tractor. I'm looking at an early 90s one listed around $15k and I'm trying to decide if it is worth it or not. I like the idea of going with a utility instead of a compact utility.

For me, there is no drawback to an 885, they were nice new and if maintained and not trashed they will be nice used. Only thing they don't have, that most newer utilities have, is "clutchless shuttle"

It actually was sale pending when I went to go look at it. There is another for sale that is 14500. Has 1200 hours on it and looks practically brand new. If I was in desperate need of another tractor then I would go look at that one but its 3 hours from me and I don't really want to make that drive right now. Is the one your considering in Penn Yan NY?

The long stroke engine had difficulty keeping the connecting rods contained in the block as compared to its other Neuss 3and4 cylinder engines.

The one I was looking at was in New York but was closer to 1800 hours. Sold last week.

It would have been 4 hours for me. Hard to commit that. I知 kind of biding my time waiting for the right deal...something 4wd, 55hp+, under 2000 hours, and FEL preferred. Unfortunately, it seems like those tractors seem to jump off the market pretty quick.

I bet it was the same one I am talking about as I don't see it anymore on tractorhouse. Penn Yan was the location and 1800 hours is what it could have been, I may have been off with that number. It looked like it came just out of the factory brand new.

Ha, yep, that was probably the one. It looked pretty babied...paint was still super glossy. I just don稚 feel desperate enough to drive 4 hours to chase down a deal
