I want to convert my oil fired steam boiler to natural gas.

Need some help determining if it's worth it.

The Peerless boiler is only 8 years old so I just want to change the burner itself.

Found this one
Midco International, Inc. | Economite EC200 & EC300

Anyone know if they are good quality?

JB.

Good Afternoon JB,
OK, I cant comment on that model, but would like to comment on gas versus oil...

Oil is averaging about $3.60 to $3.80 around here...

My last propane delivery in Ct was $2.60 and my last delivery in Vt was $1.75, dont ask because I havent figured that one out yet !

Oil prices are beginning to drop, and one gallon of oil will yield more BTU's than one gallon of gas...

Before I would commit to a costly changeover, I would certainly crunch all the numbers, and take a good hard look at them JMO !

I dont know if youve heard any of the rescent gas commercials on the radio, telling people to switch, but Im bettin that the oil suppliers have heard them all ! ;):)

Good luck with your decision !

Looks good to me. just stick to a power one not an atmospheric one. Gas will always be cheaper than oil and you don't have to have it cleaned every year! and yes you can convert it to gas:thumbsup:

I'm not jumping in to fast, I've been learning all I can the last couple of days, talking to the engineers at both the boiler manufacturer and the burner manufacturer.
Been getting differing opinions for sure :confused2:
One source told me the break even point is when oil is above 3.50 a gallon, another told me gas would have to double in price to equal what it costs to heat with oil now
The news had a storey this winter that it cost about twice as much to heat with oil this winter.
I've never been a big fan of gas, but it's that commodity price of oil that is killing me.

I always laugh when I hear those ads that gas is as safe as any other heating source, but then you hear about half a block of houses getting blown off their foundations from a gas leak/explosion.

This conversion will cost me around $1,500. - $2,000. for everything. Not changing the whole boiler. Gas company will do the service from the street to the house at no cost and give me $300. to convert.

Have you checked with the manufacturer first to confirm that the boiler can be converted?

The official position of the boiler company is they do not test them with gas burners so they make no claim one way or another. But they referred me to Midco cause they know that company has been putting gas burners in Peerless oil fired boilers for years.

The Midco people told me that is the main market they serve, the gas conversion jobs. and they are confident their gas power burner is a perfect match. They told me they have Peerless boilers set up in their R&D lab

Yes it is definitely a power burner, looks just like an oil burner. the cool thing is these things can be adjusted from 90 to 300 thousand BTUs with just adjusting the gas pressure and air fin.

One guy told me that when the oil fired boiler gets even 1/16" soot build up, it's heat transfer efficiency drops considerably.

One sticking point for me is whether the chimney would need to be lined, The local building official said it is dictated by the equipment's needs, but there is really no specific wording on it, just that the chimney needs to be in good condition. The chimney is in good condition with an 8x12 clay liner, and it's a center chimney so it stays warmer. The cool stack temp is the fear, but by most accounts it should be plenty warm enough to not drop below the 130-140 degree threshold.

Any and all comments welcomed,
JB.

HI

I'm I just switched to gas 2 seasons ago. I like it, I think there might still be a tax deduction on switching. Also the energy star will give more punch per cubic foot of gas. Of course new is better and might be worth considering.

Cheers.....Coffeeman
