I mentioned in another thread that I wished I had seen this tradesman's How to Weld With 6011 (stick) when I bought an old buzzbox.

Here's an example of his videos that can be helpful for someone starting out or in my case several years into untutored learning.

I like the choice of welding tools he describes in this video, I have several of them. And now I have ideas for couple more things that would be helpful.

Recently he has emphasized TIG but his videos covering MIG, flux, and stick are equally good.

The guy speaks slowly, he's no Project Farm. Just jump ahead as needed. He has a good sense of how to be an instructor.

What videos do others recommend?

IMO this guy is great for us beginners. Lots of the basic stuff here and easy to follow.

Thanks California.
I'll keep these in mind if my Nephew takes to welding after he reads the book I sent him.
There's a huge difference in watching a video compared to reading about it. The retention of video goes in one eye and out the ear. It's a great resource, but the comprehension isn't retained nearly as well.
Of course, the best way to learn is with a teacher/mentor who has you read about the subject, then demonstrates, allows you to make mistakes, and tells you to reread the section you just screwed up on.

I just went through some of his videos.

Excellent! He's the best welding instructor I've seen.

I guess that depends who you ask... in my welding class I couldn't care less about the theory and the teacher even said I do this because I have too, I rather make you weld off the start (after a demonstration) knowing the path and walking the path are two different things. I would say going back and forth (practice/theory) is probably the best way. Whether that theory is videos or books.

Yes ok there are a few fundamental you need to know but often books are fill with things you wont need or over complicate things, you will remember the end of the book when they put tones of emphasis on high end stuff like steel proprety and what not and you think it is super important but you haven't burned a rod yet and don't know how to weld. The biggest thing is to be able to identify flaws and knowing how or what to change so it doesn't happen. If a book can do that great, if a video can do it great, but with both people tend to get ahead of themselves. You can have someone telling you and showing you but you will get to the welding table and mess it up but at least you know you did, then you can try to fix what ever you did so you can make it right and that the important part. People always put focus on the welding but the focus should be on preparation (once you have the fundamental nail down). I can bend a welding rod to the proper angles and set it on the table and have it weld the perfect bead without touching it not very impressive to do a nice weld when it can do that on its own. On the same token you can do the perfect weld and put it in the vice and snap it in half because the heat and preparation was wrong.

Not directly aim to you or your nephew just simply putting it out there.

For sheer inspiration and welding tips, I love to watch this guy. Not a lot of fancy equipment, but man, can he fabricate.

I took his ideas and added some of my own to build my smoker:
