Any garden plants that I could plant now that will yield produce before the frost?

Thinking about building a raised garden bed but I don't of any crops I could plant in mid July and get produce through the fall. Any suggestions?

Radishes are about the fastest growing crop I can think of. Hope you like them.

You might want to check with your local Cooperative Extension office. If it's like most states, Maryland Extension publishes a "Gardening Guide" that provides a planting calendar for Maryland's hardiness zone(s).

I'm going to try beets. I'll probably plant some as soon as it quits raining, and then a couple times more over the next two weeks. I'll also have time for at least one or two more plantings of bush green beans. Might put in some turnips, too. I'm in the middle of Missouri, in zone 5 or 6 depending on who you trust. Around here you can never find plants for fall gardens, though cabbage would probably do great. Don't know if I'd have a chance with seed, though.

Summer squash (yellow straight and crookneck) will grow and produce in 45 to 60 days. I have some squash plants I planted the last week of June and they are about to produce blooms. The first blooms will be all male blooms and then the female blooms with fruit will develop after the male blooms are established. The plant will then put out runners with female blooms. I take a cotton swab and run a "dating service" to ensure a higher percentage of fruit matures instead of rotting due to not being pollenated.

I have some butternut squash also that should produce between 70 to 90 days. If your first frost is mid-October, I think you could grow those too, but you need to have seeds in the ground soon. Plant in a sunny location that gets 8 to 12 hours of sun each day. Mulch, fertilize, and water well for the quickest growth.

i dont know how many growing days you have left... the biggest issue for me when i do my second planting in summer (for fall vegies) is no one has seeds... so unless you stock them in the spring your going to be SOL come now.

If you read the back of the sead packets they will tell you how many days untill harvest.... radishes are wicked short... like 20 days.... green beans can be as long as 45... onions..take like a figgin year 210 or something stupid long like that....

you can extend your planting season with a cold frame. Rutabaga and turnips are another great late season frost/cold hardy veggies.
