Hi folks.

I recently bought an AC 4800 for my steep block.

It is a late 80s tractor with 1600 hrs on the clock.

The hours aren't necessarily correct.
When I got it home I realised that the tacho stalls at 1600rpm, so it could be double that.

Anyway, I couldn't drive it much to test it in the space that was available and being a new to me tractor I didn't want to go too fast anyway.

Having got it home I have a problem.

It doesn't matter which gear I have it in it won't go more than walking pace.

When in "top high range" if I brake it slows the tractor but will not stop it.
The engine labours and the revs drop but it doesn't feel like the clutch is slipping.

I am reluctant to chain it to a tree and see if I can force the clutch to slip in a lower gear.
At the moment I can drive it onto a trailer to get it to a dealer.

It is going to a dealer in a couple of weeks for a service and clutch replacement if necessary.

I haven't been in touch with the PO yet to find out if he was aware of a problem ;).

All of the controls seem to work except for the rear diff lock which is frozen at the moment.

Any ideas about what this could be if it is not the clutch?

Low range is very slow and high range is faster but nowhere near the 30 kmph that it should theoretically do.

I'm cool with this at the moment as it is over $30K cheaper than a new model and should be good for my requirement even with a few grand of repairs.
I just want to get out and play with the bugger.:D

Cheers and thanks in advance.

G'day mate have you got any free travel on the clutch pedal ? i.e about an inch before the pedal becomes firmer to push this may just be a linkage adjustment. Also with the slow speed have you got a creeper box that may be selected?

Hey Jon.
With the creeper on it is really slow.
There is not much freeplay in the clutch pedal.
I am reluctant to adjust it before the dealer looks at it to assist his assesment.

Well I finally got in touch with the PO.

Seems like the problem was the nut behind the steering wheel.:p

The gear selector [slow/fast/neutral/reverse] also lifts up for high range and down for low.
The bottom of the shaft is hidden behind a plate and there is no label to show.

I went out to the shed, snicked up the lever and away she went.:D
Racing across the paddocks like the dual stallions on the badge should go.

I didn't get a chance to check it out with the slasher until today as it has been wet.
It handled the 4ft slasher with ease through some very long, coarse growth and is so stable on the steep slopes that it is very confidence inspiring.
[I know, it could still roll or slide, I'm not being silly with it]

The biggest problem is the brakes are almost non-existent.
Not so bad while working as engine braking is good but some of my gates are on sloping ground and the hand brake only just works.

It will be going to the dealer for a full service and some brake work as soon as they get the manuals from the importer for me.[later this week]

Thanks for the help.

A happy wombat.
