As you can tell by my username I don't care for trespassers. The other night at about 9:30 a car came into our driveway all the to the back of my house and turned around. As they were leaving I saw the headlights. There's really no way you can get that lost to not realize you are on private property at our place. I jumped in the truck and caught up with them about a 1/2 mile up our private drive that is shared with 3 neighbors. That was just to let them know that I saw them and don't take kindly to what they were up to. I didn't confront them or try to stop them, just followed from about 100 yards until they turned at the stop sign a 1/2 mile later.

The dogs never made a sound. The old Border Collie is deaf so if she's not awake and watching she won't bark. The 75lb. mix breed just lay there watching I guess. I was pretty disappointed in her. This happened the night after 2 bodies were found about 1 mile from our house.

The next day, I put up 3 new no trespassing signs on our private drive, the others had been neglected and were impossible to read. I fixed our driveway monitor so next time I will hear them on the way in, not see them on the way out. And.......a few days later I bought a male German Shepherd puppy to back up the mixed breed in a couple years. I plan to leave him intact and get an additional collar for the invisible fence.

In my opinion, a good watch dog or two is hard to beat when it comes to trespassers.

Did you install a turn around on your drive? How about a gate or a simple chain across the entrance? You don't have to leave it closed all the time; just when you're concerned about an unwanted visitor.

The only way to turn around is to drive back behind the house. A gate isn't a very good idea the way we're set up here. Believe me, I've thought about it many times over the last 15 years. I could try to put one on the other side of the dam about 1/3 of a mile from our house, but what a p.i.t.a. that would be to get out and unlock it every time leaving and arriving, not to mention welcome visitors. A powered gate would have to be solar. I've rather have dogs, they not only watch the driveway but the rest of the perimeter and will keep coyotes off the property as well. And....I like dogs. Now I just need to come up with a name for the newest addition to our family.

We have a manually operated gate, or if I am driving, Wifey Operated.:laughing::laughing:

It does keep people from driving in when it is closed. Opening and closing the gate usually is no that bad. Whoever leaved first in the morning opens the gate and the last to leave shuts and locks it. Same thing happens when returning home. Usually, we only have to open or close the gate. The real PITA is if we have to open the gate, drive through and then lock it. That only happens if we are all leaving and in that case one person gets out to open/close the gate. This is not bad with two people but a real PITA with only one person.

We have thought about putting in a solar power gate but we just have not done it and I doubt we ever will. The nice thing about our gate is that it looks like any old farm gate. Only the road the gate blocks can be seen from the gate so people can't drive up and see the house at all. There is no reason for bad people to go around the gate. A solar powered gate would tell people there is something of value up the road. Heck, it would not surprise me, if they stole the gate operator, battery and PV panel.

The only time we have cars drive up is when we leave the gate open and someone is home. Closed gate and no cars.

Later,
Dan

What kind of driveway monitor?

Thanks,

We have a huge 120 pound black with tan feet G.S.D. and he barks at every truck, car, bicycle, or pedestrian that comes by. If someone is at the gate then he goes wild to get outside as quickly as possible. I am amazed at his hearing, even with the TV blasting, he knows when someone is walking down the road outside. We don't live more than 75 feet off the road so we get a lot of barking but we know when something is amiss outside.
Best watch dog I ever had. When he is outside, no one wants to come thru our gate, his head resembles a bears head and his huge teeth repels all boarders.

Is he intact or neutered? I'm pretty sure I'm not going to have this male neutered but I haven't raised an intact male to maturity before and I'm sure it will present new challenges. I'm considering schutzhund, I love to train dogs but don't plan on competing with him.

I think a gate, while even open does a lot to keep the numb & curious out. It's pretty hard not to notice that you are passing through a gate, especially if there's only a few feet on each side of the driveway to the gate post's. A few "keep out" & "private road" signs before the gate, along with one on the gate post should get their attention. If you have the space, a turnaround just before the gate should keep most of the "numb" people out that just can't see the signs.

Signs don't work....dogs don't work....and driveway alarms don't work (but Dakota Alert MURS is the best one I've found).....I've got all three. If people CAN drive up a drive, they will.

IF you're really serious about privacy, get a gate. Doesn't have to be solar, you can run #6 UF underground 1/2 mile and still run most openers. As for visitors, they learn to call ahead, or call from the gate. Ours do....or they go home. :D

Get a game camera that has a flash. You want your photo taken?

Several things.
What is a GSD dog?
I have a 9 yo Doberman that is still in tact. He runs the property and wouldn't hurt anybody. He is aggravating wanting to be petted all the time. I have heard him at night fighting something. He is vicious sounding but always comes back. We are looking for a female Doberman since we lost ours last year. They are hard to find.

My GSD Mickey (RIP) was between 125 and 130 lbs in his prime. I got him for security after learning that 1 in 19 houses here suffered a B&E and finding out a good dog and a good fence are the two best things here where I live for security. I already had a good fence so I went looking for a dog and found my boy. He was extremely territorial but outside the yard he was very good with people. His challenge bark was the loudest bark I have ever heard and I know it was very intimidating to everyone, even friends who knew him. If any lowlife ignored his bark I'm sure one look at him would have been more than enough to scare them off to easier pickings.

The new pup will be more disposed to "roaming" if you don't have him cut. That is why all my critters get fixed. I live way out in the sticks...I mean back in the woods on 71 acres and a long driveway. I tried the harbor freight driveway alarm and it would get messed up occasionally and just quit working. I finally got tired of the junk and got one more expensive off of ebay, maybe $40 or so, and it works flawlessly rain or shine. It helps to pay a little more and check the reviews on the product to see how many really like it and how it is used. The biggest problem I have is deer moving across the driveway at night to go and feed. That gets the monster chihuahuas going....lol.

Snickie (aka ferocious puppy)

Doodle (more laid back)

We have 2 Dakota Alerts and are happy with them. The dogs learn to look out when it goes off. The motion detection ones will pick up animals or people walking through too.

The Dakota Alert MAPS BS Kit works really well for us. It uses a metal detecting probe sensor buried along the driveway. The receiver will work with several probes at once so you can install the first one at the end of your driveway and another closer to the house so you know if they made it that far. With the metal detecting probes there are no false hits on animals. Dakota Alert also has motion detectors that work with the base station if you need them. Best prices we found for their products are on Amazon.
