I've been looking the past couple of weeks for a used land plane that is reasonably close with no luck. I stopped by a dealership to see what they carry and they carry both land pride and woods. He had neither in stock but said he would go with a woods as they are better built. Seemed like an honest guy and the prices were reasonably close but the woods was cheaper. I asked about a 7' but he said to go 8' as my tractor will handle both (38 hp) and the 8' was $100 more. I have about 1100' of driveway, maybe a little more and one parking pad 50'x110' and another 50'x50'. I did measure my driveway and they averaged 9'-10' wide so with the pads and driveway, I can see where a 8' would be beneficial but curious of what others think. I am getting the scarifiers as well. I have another place to call in the morning as its close as well that sells the bushhog brand. Opinions welcomed

Welcome to TBN.

Does your driveway have or need a crown? A land plane very much wider than half the driveway will remove the crown.

Like bcp says.......a land plane will remove any crown. It will not create a crown. You want a land plane that is close to half the width of your driveway. Up one side - back the other. Don't drag the center - it will remove the crown. If your driveway is crowned I would go with a six footer. An eight footer will lap over the center and remove the crown.

Welcome to TBN and the forum.

Welcome to TBN...

I agree with the above on the crown issue.... I have TnT on my machine so with an established crown I can maintain it pretty well.... with a Land Plane a little over the half the width of our drive...

My bigger concern is depending on your driveway, the grade & material in it, an 8ft land plane may be a lot for a 38hp tractor when it starts loading up... I don't think I would go that wide

I don't know what happened to my post count not that I have a ton of posts but I have been here since 2007. I'm thinking 7' as well but he was pushing the 8' to remove the crown. My 38 hp tractor would be towards the lower end but I do see his point on the crown. I know there are two camps on to crown or not too. He had neither so he would have to order so he was not pushing something on the lot. My driveways and pads are gravel but there are a few potholes and the gravel needs to be reclaimed as much as possible. Also, what's everyone thoughts on the quality of woods vs landpride. As of now the driveway is not crowned, I'm new so don't hold back lol.

Used land planes are "As rare as hens' teeth" As for your post counts, did you post in the Front Porch Section? When TBN did away with it, so did the post counts from over there...

I've been of the mind set that I have to drive the length of the driveway.... and back. So why try and do it all at once. I don't have a land plane, I have too many large rocks to contend with. I do fine with a 6' box blade (and T-n-T).

No way I'd go with a 8' one. My Woods 7' will stall out my 50 HP Kioti with enough dirt behind it (granted the dirt is heavier than the small driveway gravel but still). Not to mention, that's just another 12" of attachment you have to maneuver around.

I was going to say the same thing...I have a 38 HP tractor and a 6' land plane is plenty.

I'm going to go with a 7 footer as I think it will be better suited. Now if the salesman will call back lol.
