Just so i have a better handle on gear and hydraulics. I want to put in a guage to sense the pressure I have coming off my pump. That guage will only work if it is "dead headed" and nothing else is attached to relieve the pressure from the pump, right?

This conversation goes to my mower hose. If I put a gauge on the pressure side of the hose, and hook the mower up, because of the relief side being allowed to dump back into the tank I will not get an accurate pressure reading?

Also, does anyone have a skip loader and if so where, if anywhere, are there hydraulic pressure guages. I mean both where are they located and what pressures do they observe?

Thanks

Carl

Both of your assumptions are accurate. What problem are you trying to isolate?

No problem, at least at this point. I have a fully hydraulic tractor (Diesel engine drives hyraulic pump drives hydraulic wheel motors. System has 3 pumps and it would be nice to know what I am pumping out at various settings..

To elaborate from what Kenny said, when the guage is isolated to the pump and deadheading the pump you will read what psi the pump can make. But once in line, it will also read whatever pressure is being developed in the rest of the system, such as whatever the relief is set on the particular valve you're operating until it relieves. So it will work, except it reads that pressure.
Since you have 3 pumps, you'll want a guage for each, I would presume. What I did is use a gauge to set the main pressure relief for the pump by isolating and deadheading, which in my case is 2360psi. Then connected the rest of the system up and checked each valve separately to set that valve's pressure relief. I set those just slight under the pump psi. It is a little redundant, since the main pressure relief would now dictate the max pressure anyway, but what the heck.:)
