I know what your saying about the cheap filter. Sounds like you mounted just ahead of fel bracket.
Another BX plugged fuel filter.

For location of the filter, I wasnt so much concerned with protecting the lift pump as much as preventing the emulsification of the fuel and water, which might cause issues with separation. The engineers from Racor stressed that fact when I talked to them. Will it make a difference .. honestly Im not sure, I do know that Im getting excellent separation with the filter installed prior to the pump however.For $20 in hose, I think it is worth it.
