Last October I had my tractor in the shop for a few minor warranty issues (before the warranty ran out).

One of which was the acid spillage issue. They wrote on the repair ticket they cleaned and painted the area. I took the tractor home.

Now, my battery is on the blink and I'm looking closely behind and under the battery area and I see all the edges of sheetmetal are peeled up(paint) and rusted.

My question is, How far has anyone taken this issue up the ladder to get a satisfactory repair? It looks like my battery subplate may need replacing. And if I rant and rave maybe some other stuff.

Hi Kyle,my battery on my 4520 leaked also.I took it back to the dealer and they did the samething to my tractor, replaced the battery and cleaned it up.But, for my own insurance,i took the new battery out and redid everything they did.As far as pushing the issue,i would, if the damage was to the point that it ate up the steel or done damage to anything around the the battery.Even thou they cleaned the rust up around where my paint came off and repainted , when i took the new battery out it still wasn't as cleaned up as i'd like it ,so i redid it.

MY 2003 John Deere 790 done the same thing at 70 plus hrs /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.... I call my dealer and was told that they would clean it up and repaint ...I,ve worked in paint and body for over 20 years and if not clean and treated right the acid will keep on eating ,I was not happy with this /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif...I was told by my dealer to call John Deere and they would replace the hole ft end of my tractor (sheet metal) I did and they were very helpful and had no problem replacing everything i asked for (all under warranty) /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif ... when I got my tractor back I tore the ft end down and undercoated everything replaced the new battery with an jell type battery ... it,s time like this that make me glad that I bought a John Deere /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.... call and get new parts for your ft end .... why take a chance that they will miss some acid or not realy treat all the metal and truely stop the acid ....acid spill's are a hard thing to clean up ...and as great as John Deere is I not sure that they really have the know how when it comes to paint prep work... Good luck with what ever you decide ....Just remenber It's a Deere ...and they will stand behind there name !!!

No need, everything was handled at the dealer.
The first time the transmission cooler was replaced as well as battery subplate and battery holddowns. I also got a new battery, the one beginning whose part number begins with LVA....
Two months later the LVA.... battery was leaking, almost the same situation except it hadn't got the cooler this time (yet).
It came back with another new subplate and this time a sealed gel cell made by Interstate along with a custom "hold down" because the gel cell doesn't have any tabs down low to grab.
Thank goodness for a decent dealer /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks guys. I called my dealer and he assured me he'd make it right. Take it in next week. We'll see.

The local Auto Zone has what they claim is a D51R for $139.99 +tax. Guess I'll check it out. Remy says they are sold out and I need my tractor running.

My local autozone only had the non-'r' version. I don't think that you'd have any trouble getting it to fit, though...

im do not know about the 4310 but you do not have to use that little group 51 in a 790 there is plenty of room for a full size battery like a group 24 with no modifications

I just bought a 790 in May which now has 10 hours on it. If its inevitable almost the open cell Strong T battery is going to do this; can it be replaced with just a regular Walmart 12 volt Everstart 3 year battery; which I just happen to have out of a car that died. Is there anything special about the 790 tractor battery that prevents you from using just a regular one with CCA = to or above the stock battery?

Car bateries plates weren't designed for the jolting they will receive in a tractor. It will likely not hold up to the punishment. Whether it will be more resistant to leakage is a whole different matter. The JD battery is actually a very good battery. The problem is the vapors the spew in hot bouncy conditions. Bottem line is the Optimma is pretty cheap compared to a battery failure...
