My 2042 has only 10 hrs on it and this is second electrical problem. The first was headlight wiring short that blew fuses.
Now Saturday I got the tractor out and the PTO would not engauge. At first it would start and then kick out, then it went completely dead. It was 12:05 and dealer was closed so I started looking and found that the wiring that goes to the seat safety switch was routed through the mechanism that raises and lowers the mower deck. The harness had been cut in to, 2 of the wires were cut in to and the 3rd wire was stripped. I was able to splice in wires and get it to run.
I was really ticked and emailed MTD, they blew me off to the dealer. It appears that my Cub has some serious wiring problems that I thought the manufacturer should be aware of. The dealer said on Monday he would fix the problem, but I am still ticked that a tractor with only 10 hours on it has had these problems.
You may want to check your tractors to possibly avoid the problem.
