Our aniversary and one of the dogs gets skunked. My eyes hurt, it smells so bad. We caught it quickly, and ran him into the tub. He smells OK now, but the house smells bad enough to make me think I may not be able to go to sleep until Thursday. We can't even open the windows because it smells even worse out there.

Nice aniversary up to then. I was going to light a match in hopes of counteracting the smell a bit, but I thought the house might explode.

you can buy a good one on ebay

You where supposed to destroy the skunk, not take it in the house and give it a bath! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously, I think you said the dog smells better, but you may want to try tommato juice for any remaining smell. I think it's partially wive's tale, but seems to help some.

As far as the house, I have no idea what counter acts it other than time. The spray type room deoderizers maybe?

Well...Happy Aniversary! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif (what's left of it anyway)

Good idea Ernie! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I rented a high power one about a year ago. It wasn't skunk but sure took care of an unknown stagnant oder in the garage. Did the house while I was at it, just for "spring cleaning" no particular oders I was attacking.

Not cheap though, I think about $100 for the weekend. What brand do you recommend for a good buy?

Yup,
Skunks are bad news. While driving to work last year, an idiot swerved a little too close to me, and I reacted...and ended up driving right over a fresh road kill. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif (of course I think it was the other driver that actually hit the skunk...no wonder he swerved {that sob!})

It took a week before the scent was gone. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I couldn't stand to be sitting at a light etc.

I'll bet it was pretty hard to try to be romantic with the wife after that...gas masks are hard to smooch through! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I hope you accomplished most of your anniversery plans before hand. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

We had the exact same thing happen last Saturday night with our youngest pup! She and our little border collie always run in the pastures at night for a "bedtime tiring out" thing! Anyway, the doors fly open and back in runs this pup, the border collie and the wife right behind them. I'm sitting in my lounger listening to the 10PM weather and instantly got a nose full of skunk!

The wife took the pup into the guest bathroom and gave her a full bath immediately, using doggy body deodorizer too. She then followed with the Border Collie, doing the same thing! It was too late though as the whole house reaked of skunk!

When the dogs emerged from their baths and deodorizing, they were in pretty good shape, smell wise, but the house was in real bad shape. Everything they touched, brushed, or even got near on their way to the bathroom was put outside on the back patio and had to be washed the next morning.

Meanwhile, I used the OUST and sprayed the snot out of EVERYROOM!! We eliminated about 75% of the smell, but with that smell, 75% isn't enough. The next day, after washing furniture covers, bathtowels, washcloths, bathroom mats, ALL the wife's clothing from the night before, and my clothing too where the pup first rushed in to let me know about the skunk! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, we were finally free of that odor!

Next, I had a long talk with that pup and the general crux of the conversation was something along the lines of, " Black cats with white stripes down their backs are NOT for playing with"!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good luck with your skunk problem, and just know that you're not alone!!

The smell is pretty much gone now with the windows open all day, but I suspect it will be back at least once again before the summer's out.

Dogs...gotta love 'em.

Stank #1: Visiting my bro-in-law up in Humboldt County, and one of ours rolled in a dead seal on the beach. Had to ride back back home in an enclosed cargo van 15 miles with that stench.

Stank #2: Used to have one of those pet doors, which we left open all the time. One night, I woke up to hear the two girls growling at each other at the foot of the bed. Half awake, thinking they were fighting over a toy or bone, I crawled to the edge of the bed, and reached down between them in the dark to remove the offending play thing. Let's just say...nuttin' wakes you up quite like grabbing a possum in the middle of the night in your bedroom. That wasn't the worse part, though. Just as I was in the middle of freaking out over the possum, the stank hit - evidently, they had been playing with it a while, during which time it had taken a you-know-what on our bedroom carpet.

I swear - to this day, I've never smelled anything more rank than fresh possum poop. I'd bathe in skunk spray before going through that again.../forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
