my jd4110 maunal calls for 15w40 , 5w30 or 10w30. The manual's chart shows 15w40 for temps -4F to 120F and 5w30 for -15F to 110F. 5w30 would be my dino oil choice for here in NYsince it may get quite cold but not really over 100 degrees. The 15w amsoil costs $6.10qt and their 5w30 $9.40qt. I am leaning to the 15w. My understanding is these true synthetics have extended temp ranges. Am I right to assume the amsoil 15w40 diesel and marine will greatly exceed the temps the jd 15w40 dino oil is rated for?

ALso the manual calls for API class SG or higher. I do not see this class rating for either of the two amsoil oils. It just says recommended for diesel engines--
"AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil is recommended for diesel engines and other applications requiring any of the listed worldwide specifications and gasoline engines requiring API SL, SJ, SH . . . or ACEA A3."

APPLICATIONS
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil is recommended for diesel engines and other applications requiring any of the listed worldwide specifications and gasoline engines requiring API SL, SJ, SH . . . or ACEA A3.
I'm not sure if any of theses listings are higher than an Sg rating.
I run Amsoil in all my tractors from the tranny to the axle to the motor. when I changed out the axle fluid on my 3120 and went top the Amsoil it now shifts into 4x4 much smoother. the stock fluid in the axle at 50 hrs was dirty. I'm glad I swapped it.

The "S" in "SG" stands for 'spark' and is a rating for gas engines. The rating for a diesel should start with "C" for "compression".
Anyway- you are correct about the pour point on the Amsoil 15W-40 being far lower than dino oil. I run their 5W-30 Series 3000 in my 2 bota's in northern VT but would have no qualms running the 15W-40. Both weights will exceed the minimum ratings for your tractor.

I didnt know that about the "S" and the "C",(obviously) thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I run the series 3000 5W-30 in my JD 990, and the 15W-40 HD diesel & marine oil in my mom's GMC 6.5L diesel pickup (I use the "cheap" stuff in the truck because it gets changed more often).

If you noticed my location you can guess it gets pretty cold here sometimes (-30 C is not uncommon, -40 occasionally). The 15W-40 works just fine. The engine turns over like it's summer.

IMHO a true synthetic makes temperature range considerations irrelevant. It flows freely in the freezing cold and holds up fine in incredible heat. Use any weight that jives with your manual and that you are comfortable with.

Note that there seems to be a trend in recent times to go with thinner oils even in diesel engines. The notion that a diesel needs thick oil to deal with the internal combustion shock loads doesn't necessarily hold with the new engines. I believe this is especially true when using good synthetics as their film strength is much higher than an equivalent weight dino oil. I have absolutely no qualms about using 5W30 in my tractor.

Whatever weight you choose, your engine will thank you for using a good synthetic! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
